Circular fisheye optic. Trail along the old Champlain canal at "The Hemlocks", a hamlet along the Champlain Canal in a section known as the “long level”, a 16-mile section between the Stillwater and Schuylerville locks. The Hemlocks had a grocery store and day barn for stabling mules.

A walk along the Five Combines earlier today. The combines, built in 1845, are part of the Feeder Canal system, built to carry water to the Champlain Canal. Normally I would photograph the stepped structure of the 5 waterfalls but it's been cold enough to freeze the surface solid so no water was visible today although it was audible.

I'd like to write a bit about one of the more interesting historic places in my area. It's what was known in the 18th c and before as the "Great Carrying Place." It's the rhomboid area roughly defined by Glens Falls NY, Lake George village, #Ticonderoga, and Whitehall. It's the gap between Lake Champlain and the Hudson River. That gap caused a lot of history to happen there.

A map of the area between the Hudson River and Lake Champlain. It has markers at Glens Falls, the Southern end of Lake George, the southern end of Lake Champlain at Whitehall, and the northern end of Lake George at Ticonderoga
