Increasingly "AI" is revealed as a scam used to shield the perpetrator from legal responsibility. For a while it has been clear that "AI" has been a wholesale way to violate intellectual property laws, and today we learn that Elon Musk's new "AI" is just a fig leaf for spreading disinformation (vice.com/en/article/7kxqp9/elo). Scammers gotta scam, and "AI" is the scammers new best friend.

If an organization is serious about reducing #CarbonEmissions from #travel, commensurate with IPCC pathways to stay below 1.5C, it should:

* Manage total travel budgets in terms of CO2 emissions rather than cost;

* Set a baseline budget based on current travel patterns

* Reduce the total travel budget (in CO2) by 7% each year, every year, starting immediately.

(And no futzing around with offsets)

In Vox, I explained why Norway’s “EV miracle” is a cautionary tale.

Eye-popping incentives have spurred electric car sales -- but they've also widened inequality and undermined transit/biking.

Excessive EV promotions create their own problems.

Skyglow is the most pervasive form of #LightPollution, because it spreads far away from cities and other sources. For example, nearly all of Europe is affected by skyglow. Areas in the map below that are green, yellow, or red, are 30%, 125% and 500% brighter than natural, respectively. (from: science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv via lightpollutionmap.info)

The recent demonstrations that plants and animals are affected by skyglow are therefore really important (see final post for links).

Last week, CRAN released the version 1.0.1 of "collinear", the R package I wrote during my summer holidays.

It helps filter out numeric and categorical collinear predictors, and let's you decide in what order of preference these predictors should be removed.

You can find more info about the package here: blasbenito.github.io/collinear

I've also written a post about how multicollinearity can hinder model interpretability: blasbenito.com/post/multicolli

I hope you enjoy it!

#Rpackage #Rstats #DataScience

Figure derived from work by Randal Munroe published in the comic XKCD (URL https:://xkcd.com/2347) showing how the interpretation of a statistical or machine learning model can depend on multicollinearity in the model's predictors.

It shows a complex pile of blocks representing the model interpretation on top of a very small block representing a collinear predictor forgotten by the user. If this collinear predictor is removed, the whole set of blocks on top of it will crumble into a pile of rubble.

This is awesome! Full text search has come to Mastodon, and it's being rolled out in a responsible way.

I know full text search is a hot-button issue. For journalists, researchers and many others, FTS is essential. Plenty of others have good reason to keep their content unsearchable.

If you're in the latter category, you don't need to take any action. Your toots will remain unsearchable just as they were before.

For the rest, please manually change the default so your toots will be searchable. This will address a major shortcoming that has kept a huge number of fedi holdouts from joining.

To do that, go to Preferences > Public Profile and select the Privacy and Reach tab. Then check the Include public posts in search results.

*** Edit: sorry, my initial post told y'all to click the wrong box. Fixed.

Today's maintenance is complete. Please note that this version includes a significant change to search. The new version of mastodon supports full text search, but you must opt in if you want your posts to be searchable on infosec.exchange and other mastodon instances. If you do not, then no change is needed.

To enable search for your posts, go to settings -> Public Profile then select the Privacy and Reach tab and scroll down and check the box next to "Include public posts in search results", then click the save button.

!!!REMINDER!!! Tomorrow, the mastodon team is releasing a patch for a serious vulnerability. As a result, I will be applying the patch shortly after it is released sometime around 11am ET. This should not cause any downtime or disruption, but I expect there will be a lot of chatter about it tomorrow and I am trying to spare myself 11,000 DMs asking me if we've upgraded :) At least people care, right?

“British Petroleum, the second largest non-state owned oil company in the world, with 18,700 gas and service stations worldwide, hired the public relations professionals Ogilvy & Mather to promote the slant that climate change is not the fault of an oil giant, but that of individuals. It’s here that British Petroleum, or BP, first promoted and soon successfully popularized the term ‘carbon footprint’ in the early aughts.”
