Senior Lecturer in ecology in a big Uni in Northern-Ireland, studying biodiversity around trees, in places that have lots or too few: forests, farms, cities. Working for EDI. Long-distance migrant (FR, CAN, OZ, SWE, NI).
New PhD opportunity đĄđłđŽđđ€§đ€đ€, health and biodiversity actions in cities with Prof Ruth Hunter and me at Queen's University Belfast.
Visit Sarah and Maria at #BES2023 to learn why over 200,000 researchers trust us with their research data. Youâll find us at stand 5 in the exhibit hall.
Acclaimed author Isabella Tree tells us about rewilding at #BES2023. Here the book that inspired her and her husband - strangely, the first book I read when I started my PhD!
Increasingly "AI" is revealed as a scam used to shield the perpetrator from legal responsibility. For a while it has been clear that "AI" has been a wholesale way to violate intellectual property laws, and today we learn that Elon Musk's new "AI" is just a fig leaf for spreading disinformation (https://www.vice.com/en/article/7kxqp9/elon-musks-grok-ai-is-pushing-misinformation-and-legitimizing-conspiracies). Scammers gotta scam, and "AI" is the scammers new best friend.

If an organization is serious about reducing #CarbonEmissions from #travel, commensurate with IPCC pathways to stay below 1.5C, it should:
* Manage total travel budgets in terms of CO2 emissions rather than cost;
* Set a baseline budget based on current travel patterns
* Reduce the total travel budget (in CO2) by 7% each year, every year, starting immediately.
(And no futzing around with offsets)

In Vox, I explained why Norwayâs âEV miracleâ is a cautionary tale.
Eye-popping incentives have spurred electric car sales -- but they've also widened inequality and undermined transit/biking.
Excessive EV promotions create their own problems.

Skyglow is the most pervasive form of #LightPollution, because it spreads far away from cities and other sources. For example, nearly all of Europe is affected by skyglow. Areas in the map below that are green, yellow, or red, are 30%, 125% and 500% brighter than natural, respectively. (from: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.1600377 via https://www.lightpollutionmap.info)
The recent demonstrations that plants and animals are affected by skyglow are therefore really important (see final post for links).

Last week, CRAN released the version 1.0.1 of "collinear", the R package I wrote during my summer holidays.
It helps filter out numeric and categorical collinear predictors, and let's you decide in what order of preference these predictors should be removed.
You can find more info about the package here: https://blasbenito.github.io/collinear/
I've also written a post about how multicollinearity can hinder model interpretability: https://www.blasbenito.com/post/multicollinearity-model-interpretability/
I hope you enjoy it!

Like me, perhaps you suffer from Sleep Debt.
I'm setting up a global marketplace to trade SLEEP OFFSET CREDITS. While you'll just be as tired as you were before, you'll sleep better* knowing that globally we're moving in the right direction.
* not actual sleep, will be SLEEP OFFSET CREDITS

This is awesome! Full text search has come to Mastodon, and it's being rolled out in a responsible way.
I know full text search is a hot-button issue. For journalists, researchers and many others, FTS is essential. Plenty of others have good reason to keep their content unsearchable.
If you're in the latter category, you don't need to take any action. Your toots will remain unsearchable just as they were before.
For the rest, please manually change the default so your toots will be searchable. This will address a major shortcoming that has kept a huge number of fedi holdouts from joining.
To do that, go to Preferences > Public Profile and select the Privacy and Reach tab. Then check the Include public posts in search results.
*** Edit: sorry, my initial post told y'all to click the wrong box. Fixed.

âBritish Petroleum, the second largest non-state owned oil company in the world, with 18,700 gas and service stations worldwide, hired the public relations professionals Ogilvy & Mather to promote the slant that climate change is not the fault of an oil giant, but that of individuals. Itâs here that British Petroleum, or BP, first promoted and soon successfully popularized the term âcarbon footprintâ in the early aughts.â
