Part of a mosaic floor showing a hunting scene presided over by an ‘exceptional charioteer’ (ΕΥΗΝΙΩΝ). The chariot is drawn by two rather handsome and eager-looking panthers.

Sunday = dies Solis - day of Sol, god of the sun. The relief shows the god wearing a radiant crown. The pedestal of a Jupiter column depicting the gods of the week was found in the 18th century, probably  in Schwaigern-Stetten (2nd/3rd c. AD).

Happy Sunday!

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: This delicate #Roman blue and white marbled glass unguentarium, a vessel to hold oil/perfume, was made from translucent dark blue glass with trails in opaque white, dating 1st century AD.

A #Roman leather #brief/#bikini bottom with a cut-out design, tied on each side of the hips with leather laces. Made of goat leather, from Trier, dating 2nd c. AD. So far, seven differently cut leather briefs are known. It's unclear whether they were used as underwear or whether they were worn by acrobats. A terracotta figurine from #Egypt shows briefs very similar to the one from Trier, the cut-out design is clearly visible.

I love that grumpy #squid on a Greek #fish plate from Apulia, dating 330-300 BC. Fish plates were decorated with various examples of seafood. They were invented in Athens in the 5th c. BC. Most of them are found in Southern Italy, where they were produced in the 4th c. BC.

This copper alloy arm purse found in the #Roman settlement of Nida (Frankfurt-Heddernheim) was used as a secure method to carry coins. To spend the money, the purse had to be removed from the arm.

#TilesOnTuesday: a Roman 'fridge', unearthed in 2022 in the legionary fort of Novae, Bulgaria. It's a kind of container made of tiles that was embedded under the floor. It was used by the soldiers to store food. In the container fragments of pottery and animal bones were found.
