🦁🐆 It’s lion versus leopard this #MosaicMonday! This stunning scene comes from the Casa delle Colombe a mosaico at Pompeii. It seems the lion truly has the upper hand, standing over the prone leopard. The power of the lion’s claws are matched by its direct stare at the viewer.

🎭It’s theatre time this #MosaicMonday with a troupe offering a comedic performance (the smiling masks are the giveaway!). The play itself we’re not sure about but the tambourine, small cymbals, and the double flute share a connection with the goddess Cybele.

The mosaic was found in the so-called Villa of Cicero near Pompeii and is now held in the MAN Napoli.

Neptune's triumph black and white mosaic in the frigidarium of Neptune's baths in Ostia Antica. The baths were built late during the reign of the emperor Hadrian and dedicated early (~139 AD) in the reign of Antonius Pius. The building was east of the theatre.

In this scene, we see Astivus, a hoplomachus, lying on the ground while the retiarius Astacius stands above him to inflict the killing strike. Astivus’ carries the symbol theta suggesting he is doomed to die if not dead already. Next to Astacius is an incitator (encourager to fight) named Iaculator. Below him is a portrait of a dead gladiator named Rodan who also carries the theta symbol.

The mid-5th century AD mosaic from the Chedworth Roman villa in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. The mosaic was found in a possible summer dining room in this National Trust site. This shows that at least some people kept the opulent lifestyle into the Dark Ages.

This #MosaicMonday we are immersed in this Nilotic mosaic from Palestrina. Greek soldiers can depicted on the banks of the Nile and appear to be sheltered from the weather by a large cloth that drapes down from the columned building nearby.

#AncientRome #History

This scene is part of the Nile mosaic of Palestrina (c. 100 BCE), found in Palestrina, Italy. It portrays a group of Ptolemaic Greek soldiers in Egypt on the banks of the Nile. The soldiers are clad in typical Hellenistic equipment including Phrygian and Attic type helmets, tunics or armour made of linen (linothorax in Greek), and various shield designs common to Hellenistic armies at the time. Similar Nilotic settings were popular in Republican and Imperial Roman art as a result of the Roman fascination with Egypt's exotic culture.
