“Why can’t #Fediverse software simplify the onboarding process by piling everyone onto one server – much like #Bluesky does?”

The simple reason: money.

Bluesky is able to support 20M users because it has VC money to support that scale. Put simply, #Bluesky has $28M in funding, and therefore can afford the server infrastructure.

In contrast, #Pixelfed is subsisting on $1,419/month. No, I didn’t forget some zeros. It’s literally making do with $1,419. Which is why @dansup is having a tough time with pixelfed.social – he works with what he has.

But in the event he doesn’t have enough resources, thankfully 600 other servers can pick up the slack, which allows Pixelfed some horizontal scale. No, pixelfed.social cannot meet the demand for all Pixelfed registrations, but other servers can meet the demand.

This, by the way, is also what happened in November 2022. Lots of people wanted a mastodon.social account. However, because Mastodon only had a few thousand dollars in funding – not millions – it had to close registrations for a short period. Thankfully, other servers were able to pick up the slack.

And this was not a negative thing. It’s what helped grow decentralization.

Now if you want your favourite server to have more scale, they need funding. So be sure to give your admin a donation to help grow your communities.

Save the date for the 'Radical Open Access III: From Openness to Social Justice Activism' conference on 10 and 11 April 2025, online and at the Milstone Room, Cambridge University Library.

How can social justice activism be promoted or unfolded through academic publishing? What is the value of collectivising through publishing projects? What are the dynamics, challenges, and opportunities that arise when individuals and communities from diverse backgrounds come together to work on shared radical publishing projects?

More info and registration details in January.

Feeling lucky to have had my first journal peer review experience with such a wonderful and generous team of researchers and practitioners across the fields of #publishing #digitalculture #opensource and more.

Loved being part of the reviewer's team and having the chance not only to read more about research topics close to my heart but also collectively explore what forms open peer review might take in a future that is #openaccess & #opensource.

My PhD thesis Reading Differently: Expanding Open Access Definitions Towards Greater Knowledge Equity is finally out! pureportal.coventry.ac.uk/en/s
Writing this thesis was a shared undertaking that I cannot fully claim credit for. During this PhD, I have written, have been written and unwritten, in profound co-authorship(s) without a clear beginning or end. This PhD has taken shape through the struggles, love, sufferings, labours, dedication, joys, and insights of many others to whom I am incredibly thankful.
A special thanks to @openreflections and @Samuelmoore for all their wisdom, support, and generosity
