The invasion of Minneapolis was a •disaster• for the Trump regime. They shot themselves in the foot. In both feet. They’ve lost support they desperately need from many different quarters: the press, the judiciary, the population’s mushy middle, their own party, even some of their own base. They don’t have an authoritarian state yet — and their path to achieving one looks a •lot• more distant than it did at the start of Dec.

Update. But are #publishers right to worry that #AI companies can freely scrape the #WaybackMachine in order to train their tools? No, says Mark Graham, director of the Wayback Machine.
https://www.techdirt.com/2026/02/17/preserving-the-web-is-not-the-problem-losing-it-is/
"The Wayback Machine is built for human readers. We use rate limiting, filtering, and monitoring to prevent abusive access, and we watch for and actively respond to new scraping patterns as they emerge."

I'm old enough to remember when professional diplomats & negotiators could quickly sift through the crap & see it for what it was.
But Russia now has imbeciles & children on the other side of the table, in a world that believes any & all Russian lies.
The time of amateurs & liars is ascendent.
Something that I've noticed, both in the fediverse and other places, is that when marginalized people within the US complain about the US, non-USians arrive to remind us that we're still American, and therefore the ways we're marginalized don't matter and they don't care... in a way they do not talk to or respond to privileged Americans.
They use Black and Indigenous people in the US as acceptable targets for their hatred of the US instead of the people driving policy and holding the world hostage.
I'm so tired of the whole " #AI has democratised #art " narrative. Cheap or even free creative tools and learning resources have existed for decades. Not wanting to become good at something is not the same as not having the resources to do it.
Speaking of resources, something AI is excelling at is increasing the price of computers by hoarding RAM and disk space, thus making things harder for less privileged creative folks. How very democratic.
So Skynet is real and the movie War Games was a documentary?
The only thing that WarGames got wrong was that Broderick's character should have been yelling "come on, _learn_, god dammit!" at the people next to the computer instead.

It continues to frustrate me that reporting always seems to say "data center" without distinction. I've worked in data centers for decades and, not only are those centers not the problem, most of the companies in them are heavily affected by the problem. Without data centers the internet doesn't exist. Access to components is becoming an issue for the traditional data center.
The problem is specific to AI data centers and AI companies themselves. Those are the data centers being built at an alarming rate and are affecting many of the companies that you don't hear about that keep the internet running.
Tonight seems like a good time to remind folks that the next #nokings protest is planned for March 28th:
Mark your calendars, I'll see you there! ✌️
I don’t think people understand how bad this is going to get.
System Administration: Week 5: Networking I:The Physical Internet
In this video, we look at the physical structure of the internet, with a focus on submarine internet communications cables. Jumping from the bottom of the OSI stack all the way to Layer 9 ("political"), we then discuss how different countries use their political power to enforce internet blocks on their citizens, leading us to warrantless wiretapping in AT&T's room 641A.
