Getting ready to move servers ... wish me luck :)
Computer Scientist with an interest in #NLProc dating back to the late 20th century. Increasingly thinking about where social issues and computing intersect in both the present and past. In particular how AI amplifies and generates #Racism, #Islamophobia.

Hello/Hola, I'm a historian of technology in the MIT Program for Science, Technology, and Society. I am interested in the relationship of science, technology, and design to processes of political change, especially in Chilean history. I teach classes in areas such as data and society, the history and social studies of computing, and science, technology, and human rights. #histodons #sts #histsci #histtech #histSTM #LatinAmerica #humanrights #data
One of my projects this semester has been developing and then submitting a proposal for a new class at my place. It is meant for first year students of any major and the proposed title is Algorithms, Race, and Computing. If approved the class will be part of our general education (lib ed) curriculum as of Fall 2023. I'm hoping for good things, and if so I'll report back with more details and (crucially) asking for advice! Stay tunred. #highered #algorithmicracism #computerscience
@LocoCravey Well hang on there are Vice Deans and Directors and Chancellors who are just getting by ... #highered
it's grad application season and people are talking about DEI statements and stuff; i'll just repeat something i heard a while back that was helpful for me:
applicants shouldn't need to wax philosophical about what they'll bring to your conspicuously white organization; at the very least, you should be able to talk about what you're doing to make this workplace safe and supportive, and not one which will grind them to dust under tokenism and all the DEI & service work nobody else volunteers for
Trying to think of ways to find FAccT community content on here—it looks like the only way to make stuff searchable is with a hashtag, and we don’t have a local instance (yet). So maybe #FAccT will help? And I guess #philosophy for me too? Anyone want to try make that work?
Within #histSTM History of AI is especially interesting to me, #AIHistory maybe for a hashtag... ? #introductions
@KLdivergence no no, i'm done. no looking back.👋
Well ok, it's done. Whew.

Are there barriers you face in carrying out #NLProc research? We hope to better understand what those are, who is affected, and how we can improve. Here's a short survey to get things started, please share!

@KLdivergence Yikes. Unsettling how central just a few platforms are to ... everything ...
@KLdivergence I was looking at my linked in a few days ago and I just threw up my hands and deleted it. Felt kinda good.
@KLdivergence It's working!!! 😀
