Heartbreaking to see the damage in and around #NewOrleans, knowing that some of the affected residents have now experienced two strong tornadoes this year and a strong hurricane (Ida) a year ago. Watching this man on WDSU show the tornado damage, which is next to a lingering pile of hurricane damage. #LAwx #FediWx #tornado

Just applied to an apartment in DC where I told the guy that my credit was really bad. He said I’d be fine. Got denied, lost the apartment, and the application fee.
This ain’t meant for people who don’t already have money.

The first Gen Z Congress member was denied a D.C. apartment due to bad credit.
Freshman reps don’t get a paycheck until February even though they start working on January 3rd.
Congress is inaccessible to those who don't have wealth.
It’s designed to keep working people out.
Books by James Baldwin, one of America’s greatest intellectuals, humanists and activists (he was also a film critic* and historian) that I highly recommend. Well, I highly recommend all of them including the one in my photo. Here are just a few of the other Baldwin books you must read:
Go Tell It On The Mountain
Notes Of A Native Son
No Name In The Street
The Devil Finds Work*
Another Country
If Beale Street Could Talk
The Evidence Of Things Not Seen

So much for civility. If you don't like the content of someone's tweets, mute or block them.
@talia_christine been seeing a lot of complaints about Twitter users migrating over.
It's their account. Mute them (and me) if you don't like what someone posts
Twitter users migrating to Mastodon is the best thing to happen to FOSS since Blender and Linux. Mastodon has an opportunity to displace a monopoly. Yet old timers are playing the old AOHELL game from the mid 1990s, when AOL brought an influx of newbies to teh dialup intartubez.
This knee-jerk anti-newbie reaction is rooted in the same prejudice that anti-immigration is rooted in: Fear and annoyance of 'The Other'. A maligned but growing new minority. We are better than this.
Proposal to stop referring to covid in the past tense and climate change in the future tense.
This is truly enraging.
The terrorist who killed 5 people at Club Q boasted during a 2021 bomb threat about his plans to become “the next mass killer.” Knowing this full well, authorities dropped all charges anyway and still let him keep his guns. His records were then sealed to ensure he wouldn't have to face the consequences for his threats to terrorism.
Meanwhile, Tamir Rice played with a toy gun and authorities killed him in 1.7 seconds because they "feared for their lives."

Reminder to anyone who supports the NYT staff's labor action: unless a miracle happens and we get a contract deal by midnight, we will be walking out for one day tomorrow, Dec. 8.
We'll be asking supportive readers to abstain from visiting/using NYT offerings for the day, midnight to midnight. That means articles. That means multimedia. That means... Wordle.
I know. That one pains me too. But maybe the word will be like LYMPH and we'll all be lucky to miss it.
Today is Pearl Harbor Day in the U.S., a “day that will live in infamy” for the unprovoked attack by the Empire of Japan upon U.S. forces stationed in Hawaii. But it also marked a dark turning point for Japanese Americans, who overnight became the “enemy.” (1/4)
