A few notes for overseas observers of Australia's fucked-up referendum:

1. The purpose was to establish a First Nations advisory body to the Federal Parliament. This had nothing to do with citizenship, or equal rights, or any of the other crap half-informed people seem to think was involved.

2. We needed a referendum to include the proposed body in the federal Constitution. The Constitution can only be amended via a referendum.

3. We needed to include the body in the Constitution because that would have protected it from being abolished by the next right-wing government without another referendum. Previous efforts to elevate First Nations control of First Nations issues have routinely been abolished by right-wing governments.

4. The sheer volume of disinformation has been as depressing as fuck.

5. Yes, there's racism throughout all of this. Also extreme ignorance, some of it wilful.

With the loss of the #VoicetoParliament #referendum, Australia has had its Brexit moment, where conservatives and imperialists have hijacked and corrupted the democratic political process. It will take years to uncover the myriad of lies, but ultimately history will not be kind to the selfish and mean-spirited. A sad day. #AusPol

The result of the referendum beggars belief. How Australians could let themselves be persuaded by fear and division instead of calling it out for what it was just makes me incredibly sad for the future. I’m sure over the days and weeks to come many who voted NO will say they are not racist but if it looks like racism smells like racism and walks like racism then that’s what it is.

I’m sure the right wing loonies of Sky after dark will be gloating. And that geriatric prick Murdoch will also be cheering the referendum result. Yet again fear triumphs and indigenous Australian’s yet again are denied even basic human rights and dignity. Australia, the land of a fair go, unless you’re indigenous

Finally that abhorrent slogan “If you don’t know say no” I guess proved that a lot of Australians didn’t even take the time to become informed. For them ignorance is the excuse to say No. We could not even manage to have a respectful debate. How any of us can now look indigenous people in the eyes is beyond me.

I hope you are handling the trauma of the moment okay. For me, it’s affecting my heart rhythm - the same situation when my parents died a few years ago.
My thoughts are with the innocent victims of Israel and Palestine. I can’t begin image what it would like over there, and with more to come.
My thoughts are also with our Indigenous people who’ve been subjected to awful abuse during this referendum - may Australia pay them respect with its vote

#ImNotSayingImOldBut I remember the kid next door convincing me that #StarTrek (The original series) was the cool new show I needed to see.

Even better than #Thunderbirds, #TimeTunnel, or #VoyageToTheBottomOfTheSea
#HashTagGames

Star Trek original cast photo (L-R) Scott, Spock, Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, and Chekov in uniform shown from the thighs up in front of a psychedelic backdrop.A LP record cover for the Thunderbirds television show. The marionettes for the 5 Tracy brothers, their father and Lady Penelope are arrayed across the top. In the middle their island retreat/base is shown with their green jet beside it. Along the bottom is their upright steel spaceship and the Thunderbirds logo. The black and white striped optical illusion tunnel is shown with the two principal time agents (male) appearing to be sucked in. The Time Tunnel logo in red with a yellow male figure in its upper right corner is centered at the bottom of the poster. In the Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea movie poster from 1961, the title takes up the centre third. On the right there is an image of a large atomic powered submarine diving with an inset image of the principal cast and the cover of the original book. On the left? A giant squid is shown in conflict with a diver against the image of an urban shoreline.
