oh my. how do i prove that all my usb-cables are dumb?

#usb #spying

𝕕𝕚𝕒𝕟𝕒 🏳️‍⚧️🦋 wrote the following post Tue, 17 Jun 2025 11:07:43 +0200 A USB cable with built in operating system and wifi for exploiting computers

A tiny circuit board containing an ESP32-S3 hides inside a USB-C plug on each cable, and can carry out a keystroke injection attack. The cable’s firmware is open-source, and has an impressive set of features: a payload syntax checker, payload autocompletion, OS detection, and the ability to impersonate the USB device of your choice. \ The cable provides a control interface over WiFi, and it’s possible to edit and deploy live payloads without physical access to the cable (this is where the syntax checker should be particularly useful). The firmware also provides a remote shell for computers without a network connection; the cable opens a shell on the target computer which routes commands and responses through the cable’s WiFi connection (demonstrated in the video below). \ The main advantage of the Evil Crow Cable Wind is its price: only about $25, at which point you can afford to lose a few during deployment. We’ve previously seen a malicious cable once before. Of course, these attacks aren’t limited to cables and USB drives; we’ve seen them in USB-C docks, in a gaming mouse, and the fear of them in fans.

@julie I did sound for that one once, while simultaneously playing guitar in the pit band. Fun show 👍

@dj3ei

👍 can confirm

Several times I've used vintage pre-CTCSS radios to talk on repeaters that use tones. I use a signal generator app on my phone playing the necessary tone audibly, usually just on the desk or in my shirt pocket, and hey presto it works.

It means I have to hear the tone constantly, but it's not a real problem. The volume needed is pretty low, and of course the outgoing signal is filtered so no one else hears it.

A friend had problems opening a #HamRadio FM relay with the 1750 Hz audio it requires to spring into action: His (cheap) rig sends a tone that considerably deviates from that wanted frequency.

Workaround: A 1750 Hz tone in an audio file. Playing that close to the rig's mic while pushing PTT opens the relay nicely.

For a longer version of the same story (also available in German) and that sound file, turn to dj3ei.famsik.de/blog/posts/202 .

Restrictions on discrimination by physicians would no longer include marital status or political affiliation under new federal guidelines.

@ai6yr @DavidGallagher The area has become pricy (just like the whole Peninsula) so a lot of homes have been redone, but in the new photo they do look like they were all done by the same developer. The fire hydrant isn't in the right place. That could have been moved, though; it's been a long time.

The Bayshore (101 freeway) wasn't built until 1960 or so, so any neighborhood with lot layouts accommodating it will be too late also.

2025-06-17

@DavidGallagher @ai6yr Look for house size in each tract also; that's pretty big for the area.

2025-06-17

@DavidGallagher @ai6yr No time at the moment to start searching, But as Ben points out, the Bay is visible (probably, assuming it's really shot the same day), the shadow of the tree tells us we're probably looking within 45 degrees of north, and you have a cross street that doesn't line up.

I'd start by scanning east-west streets, looking for the wonky cross street. The hardest part is deciding where in the world you want to start scanning, but we know already.

@ai6yr Unacceptable. I love the Eastern Sierra and go there often. Every time I see Manzanar it is a solemn occasion and II am reminded, "never again." We need this monument to keep the country honest about its history and who we actually are as a nation and to keep our humanity.

2025-06-17

@SRLevine @ai6yr Being American means knowing that it is a process. You can't be patriotic and ignore the past; it's part and parcel of the thing, and guides our efforts to create the country we could be one day.

Comic-book flag waving is just ignorant jingoist tribalism, rooted only in stupidity and evil.

Pretty wild how a guy who, shoots four prominent people (killing 2), plus more attempted and plans to hurt far more, was able to be safely and humanely arrested.

But a nervous Black person can be killed by cops over a traffic ticket for doing nothing threatening at all and it's just Tuesday.

"LAPD and LA Sheriffs tried to prevent two large protests from joining together in downtown and both departments ended up hitting EACH OTHER with impact munitions from across the same interesection."

"Many of the LA Sheriffs didn't have their gas masks on yet so the Sheriffs got gassed by LAPD."

"LAPD was on the radio crying about getting shot by rubber bullets by the sheriffs, so I'd say fair trade."

Fucking fuckitty fucking fuck...

I am a person who cusses a lot, but I do not have enough cuss words for this

Heaven forbid we should disparage people who ran a fucking concentration camp

'Displayed on a site where American citizens were held against their will for more than three years, the signs encourage visitors to report any depictions of U.S. history that “inappropriately disparage Americans past or living” or fail to highlight the “beauty, abundance or grandeur” of the landscape, according to a Manzanar official.

'Identical signs are now posted at every national park site across the nation, regardless of whether that site’s purpose is to educate the public about horrifying mistakes and grave injustices perpetrated by the U.S. government. Although it’s unclear how and where the president’s directive will be enforced, park advocates and historians are bracing themselves for a drastic reframing of the darkest chapters of the nation’s history.

“If this administration has its way, [Manzanar is] probably one of the stories they’d rather see go away,” Dennis Arguelles, the Southern California director of the National Parks Conservation Association, told SFGATE.'
