Having worked in a hospital for over twenty years, the idea of refusing to treat a patient seems foreign. But the VA gave veterans a chance to speak to the proposed rule changes (see the attachment) and they ran the changes by veterans organizations and oversight committees in the US House and Senate and everyone was cool with it. Right? Well, I'm just going way the heck out on a limb and guess no the VA didn't. Whether or not the VA checked with interested parties, if I was a VA clinician and I refused to treat red-capped MAGA veterans, the VA would have no problem with my decision. Right?
It would be characteristic of Trump to value veterans only to the extent that he can fake it.

My #thoughts this evening. I’m beginning to pay closer attention to how dear orange leader refers to Democrats. Honestly, it’s horrifying. He paints #Democrats as subhuman vermin, almost on the same sublevel as immigrants. With the latest move of the regime, making it possible for #VA facilities to deny medical care to veterans based on #Democratic leanings, is actually way beyond chilling. In countries like #Hungary that the regime emulate, opposition political parties have been declared illegal. It feels to me like we’re heading in that direction. Lots of #MAGA supporters have hated #Democrats since long before his infamous escalator ride a decade ago. I remember epithets like evil baby killer being thrown around as far back as the 90s and probably even beyond that. When does this end? Or maybe more to the point, does this end? I do not want to wind up living in an authoritarian police state. #GodHelpUsAll
So, I'm guessing these people would be fine if VA doctors could refuse treating MAGA or Republicans when Democrats are in charge?

In response to a #Trump order, the Veterans Administration (#VA )has changed its bylaws & erased rules prohibiting discrimination based on ‘national origin,’ ‘politics,’ & ‘marital status’.
It also got rid of rules against staffing discrimination based on “national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, membership in a union, or affiliation with a ‘lawful political party’.”
The VA has called the changes a ‘formality’.

For some reason The Guardian mentioned two of the items removed from the policy in the headline - politics ("Democrats") and marital status ("unmarried veterans") - but they did not mention national origin.
In the current political climate, with all the anti-immigrant actions happening (ICE agents dressed up like thugs and rounding up people willy nilly), it seems strange to omit that change in the policy.

I've included a screenshot from the article that lists the changes to the patient policy. Similar changes were made to rules for medical staff.
