@M0YNG Found a page of undocumented CAT control commands that lists an "off" command that might work. Would be nice to have an out of band override as a safety feature for remote operation though.
@M0YNG This is a great idea! Now I'm trying to think of how I could power my FT-817 on/off remotely. I usually power it from a LiFePO4 battery with built in charging circuits that allow me to leave it plugged in. So an AC relay wouldn't be sufficient unless I removed the battery from the equation. Hmmm…
Happy Tau Day!

I ended up just running WSPR in the background with my radio sat atop the cooler. Funny thing I realized later is that we sat near a big metal barn which seems to have ensured all of my signal went westward. :P
@va3db Yeah! I wish I had seen that project sooner as I definitely would have set up for that and left something receiving at home! Really good idea!
Is anyone planning on doing any particular radio stuff during the eclipse?
I found this list of ideas:

I've driven down to Dayton, OH and plan to be somewhere in the path of totality with my FT-817 and MFJ-1899T tomorrow.
Might try doing some kind of radio experiment or data gathering, but very much vacation style. Main goal is to experience the eclipse with family.
It occurs to me that many people have callsigns that are the same number of characters for their amateur radio identifiers, which implies that a metric for dxing exists where you seek to contact someone with a maximally different callsign -
that is, finding the greatest hamming distance.
@jsonstein indeed! thx 4 trying! 73!
@jsonstein Not hearing N8VCL anymore. I have bad local QRM on 20 so it's probably on my end now. I definitely did hear your first via WX5DL at least!
@jsonstein Nothing heard yet. 😕
@jsonstein N8VCL might be another path. Heard a HB response for you and for myself just now.
@jsonstein Got it! Did my response make it back?
@jsonstein According to pskreporter, I'm being heard in WA by K7API and in the Canary Islands by EA8EE, but I'm not hearing any responses to HBs or CQs.
@jsonstein I think we'll be in each others' skip on 10, but maybe we can get lucky and connect through some distant relay. I've never really had any luck with JS8 though, so we'll see. 🤷♂️
@jsonstein This is QRP with my FT-817 + MFJ-1899T inside my upstairs office.
@jsonstein *Waves hello in 28Mhz*
If you are a technician class ham radio operator, get on 10m... it's been hopping, and you'll get a taste of the DX you get more often on the other bands you have access to as general class. My son worked Italy and Belgium this week on 40w sitting in the backyard, on sideband!! #hamradio
Later today there will be a special SSTV image sent from the ISS over the north eastern USA starting around 20:05 UTC by @ARISS_Intl
If you have a Raspberry Pi (not a Zero, any other model) an RTL-SDR radio dongle, and an outside antenna (or just one near a window) you can receive it!
The easiest way is to use the ARISS Radio Pi image. Here are the instructions:
https://github.com/alanbjohnston/CubeSatSim/wiki/Radio-Pi
Use Choose Another Frequency then type 437800
@NG0E hf.dxview.org is very cool! Is it possible to pre-select settings for the view using query params? For example, I'd love to visit a URL and have it default to the MUF view from the vantage point of my own grid EN73.
