Here's a thing that makes Mastodon instances work less well than they could...
when you visit an instance, all the front pages look the same.
"About this instance" is a TINY little link under the sign-up form. This is crazy.
Instances should LEAD with a community description, not bury it.
That's like a newsgroup leading with the OS it used to run the newsgroup rather than saying: "This is a Kenny G community"

@Rushyo The biggest problem Wikipedia faces IMO is the all-encompassing dominance of the english language.
There's twice as many english language articles as the next best language (german).
I speak french and english and article quality is very very low in languages that aren't english. Even with French being the 3rd most common language on Wikipedia and the 5th most edited.

tl;dr This is a nice thing but it's VERY problematic in non-english languages.

Probably the most important thing I've learned about web services is learning to make them degrade gracefully. What happens when the database is slow/down? What happens when you can't check the auth token? etc. etc.
