Teacher. Word nerd. No heroes but Jesus. Transplanted to the tropics. Hopelessly geriatric Millennial.

@funnymonkey Thank you again! I passed it on.

@funnymonkey Asking for a literal friend of a friend on BlueSky:

"Any concerns (e.g., privacy, student data, ethics, etc) about Studiosity as provider in higher education? Pointers?"

🙏🏼

@JulieB I suppose every church member has made a compromise in order to avoid worse compromises, you know? It's worth it to me, but it comes at a cost.

I just try to imagine how many imperfect teachings Jesus sat through for three decades, try to have some humility, and then study the passage on my own. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Often during those intra-sermon study sessions, God is very kind in granting insights that help me.

It took ten weeks of suffering through a series on the Sermon on the Mount, waiting to find out what was redemptive about it.

Week after week of legalistic preaching. "If you're a true Christian, you will X... so scrutinized yourself to see if you're a true Christian, let us pray."

For none of it was Jesus actually necessary. I just wilted in the seats.

Finally, in the last wrap-up sermon, I remembered Jeremiah 31:33-34, and I found the good news:

“Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days”—the Lord’s declaration. “I will put my teaching within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin."

That's why Jesus is positioned parallel to Moses, on the mountain as the new and greater lawgiver. You can't make sense of it unless you already understand what the OT says about the new covenant. The new covenant isn't like the old one. It starts with forgiveness and with its law written *on hearts* by the Spirit.

That's what I needed to hear.

So I thought I'd share.

@geoff_eg This is a cool idea!

@mathi_gwithyas lol this is excellent 😂

@mathi_gwithyas Congratulations!!!

Trump isn’t staying in Milwaukee for the RNC — he’s going to stay in Chicago instead.

Why? Because Trump has a hotel in Chicago.

So when the Secret Service and his political entourage all need hotel rooms, Trump gets the money.

THE ENTIRE THING IS A GRIFT.

This is an absolutely bombshell report from Reuters:

“At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. military launched a secret campaign to counter what it perceived as China’s growing influence in the Philippines, a nation hit especially hard by the deadly virus.

It aimed to sow doubt about the safety and efficacy of vaccines and other life-saving aid that was being supplied by China, a Reuters investigation found. Through phony internet accounts meant to impersonate Filipinos, the military’s propaganda efforts morphed into an anti-vax campaign. Social media posts decried the quality of face masks, test kits and the first vaccine that would become available in the Philippines – China’s Sinovac inoculation.”

So #Putin offers us “peace” if we surrender four regions completely, including Kherson and Zaporizhe.

This is insane, since he wants #Ukraine to submit even two large cities #Russia doesn’t control.

We also have to promise not to join #NATO

This is not a peace offer, this is basically a demand for unconditional surrender. But my point is different.

Watch everybody in the coming days who say Russia wants peace. They are either idiots or russian assets.

Pls boost.

@jensimmons I love* how banning masks is expected to stop crime but banning guns would have no effect.

*for a value of love which means hate.

Further to this point, it belatedly occurs to me that Swartz was railroaded for downloading scientific papers that he ostensibly had a right to access. Meanwhile Sam's OpenAI business model is more or less predicated on downloading the entire internet, licensing be damned.

Back in the 90s, I had a friend who jumped through many hoops to get a carry permit in NYC. He bought a gun and started carrying regularly on his subway ride from Brooklyn to Manhattan. He sold it a few months later

I asked him why he went through all that trouble only to sell it so soon. He said,

"The longer I carried it, the more I started itching for an excuse to use it"

I think about that a lot

Washington man fatally shoots 17-year-old who had BB gun, says he 'had a duty to act'

AMARIS ENCINAS | USA TODAY 9:20 pm EDT Jun. 7, 2024

An off-duty security guard has been arrested on amurder charge after he fatally shot a 17-year- old boy who had been returning a BB gun to a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in a Seattle suburb.

Aaron Brown Myers, 51, told police he thought the teen and his friends were about to rob a store and that he was also worried about the safety of his own 13-year-old son, who was in a jujitsu class next to the sporting goods store.

Brown told police that the teens were ignoring his commands and he thought that one of them was "going to kill him," according to a Renton Police Department probable cause statement obtained by USA TODAY on Friday.

"Teach me to fight!"

"Very well," the swordmaster said, "but first tell me why you want to learn."

"My honour has been stained!"

"Ah. I will teach you, if you accept the first lesson."

"Which is?"

"There is no stain that can be washed away with blood."

I started a Pixelfed account specifically for my photography. Or at least to have an account I could put on a card to give to strangers when I'm doing photography in public. If you're interested in following my photography journey, it's at @CibaoLens

@JulieB I am very much done taking advice that demands individual solutions to systemic problems.

@ConorMahood @Infrapink If the original language subtitles were designed as closed captions for deaf or hard of hearing viewers, they may be meeting different needs or complying with different sets of regulations.

I'm old enough to remember when TV shows edited the dialog in captions to make it shorter in order to fit the words in the space or on the screen for long enough. There were only so many pixels to work with.

The other thing that happens (but shouldn't) with scripted shows is that the captioners might get the script that was written but not the version that was updated to account for the actors' changes. It's common for TV people to try to skimp on access and not clean up their act until there's a regulator or a lawsuit.
