Time to X off an old social network that had gone downhill so much that I'd mostly stopped using it anyway. Tonight it told me I was basically shadow banned for inactivity but could work to get back in their good graces. Why bother? Thanks for showing me the door. I won't miss that place at all.

Some people think of "prepping" as being only for those who expect the world to end soon. You don't have to expect the end of the world; there are many lesser #disasters, large and small, that will be more comfortable if you're ready for them.

Whether it's running out of gas on a long car trip in harsh weather, or a riot in your neighborhood, #prepping can make these situations less problematic for you. No end-of-world needed!

@cheribaker I love a good rice cooker. Wish I had one! When I found myself single again, one of the first things I bought was a very cheap rice cooker. It was small & kinda hard to clean, but made good rice. Gave it to Goodwill and bought a larger nonstick one. Bad move! Easier to clean, but never cooks the rice thoroughly - not even close.

Saw someone on Twitter bemoan the nazis flooding in & that "there isn't a good replacement for Twitter yet."

This person grew up with mostly corporate, centralized apps + services.

Not their fault.

But if you cut your teeth on Usenet, IRC, early www, gopher, or any of the truly "we're making this up as we go using very rough protocols" you know that ActivityPub/Fediverse & Mastodon already have enough groundswell to succeed.

It's the most excited I've felt about the internet in ages.

I write #postapocalyptic stories, trying to convey realistic scenarios along with what we might do to prevent them or mitigate the damage from them.

I am a vocal advocate for sustainability, at the level of the individual as well as greater society. Reliance on others is counter to readiness and adaptability. We should always be ready to be cut off from others and still survive.
