Here's a first... I just got an email because ChatGPT suggested an article I wrote to somebody. Could I send them a copy? Except, I never wrote the article, it doesn't exist. PLEASE realize right now that this tool isn't pulling out cool references for you. It's making plausible titles and matching them to authors names.

As the administrator of Australia's oldest still-operational Mastodon-compatible instance (now in its sixth year) I'd like to say that both places I'm involved in - Chinwag and The Blower - have continuity plans and a great deal of thought has gone into making sure they are not dependent on me alone to survive.

If I should burn out at some point, I will pass the administration off to another person or suitable organisation.

These communities are bigger than me and my whims, present and future.

The key takeaway for would-be whistleblowers, leakers, and journalists working with sensitive sources is to never trust the cropping functionality afforded by professional-level apps and other document and image manipulation software and services. theintercept.com/2023/02/14/wh

@Jinglepocket

Often that can be circumvented by using a site like archive.is. Not with every site which paywalls articles, depending on the paywall implementation, but a lot of them.

The toxic disaster in East Palestine, Ohio after the chemical releases following the train derailment reveal classic #toxic
disaster management techniques.

The true extent of the danger and seriousness of the event is not made clear to people when it happens. Instead their anxieties are managed.

This is a way to protect capital, and liability rather than living creatures. It is similar to the denial of there having been #nuclear meltdowns at #Fukushima for three months by the government of Japan. This was to protect reputation and perceptions, not human beings.

My advice, as always: when an industrial disaster happens, what you are being told about the hazards on the first day are, at best, 10% of the real dangers you face. Always assume that you should get away as fast as possible. Better to be wrong and safe, than wrong and exposed.

Whatever safety feature you think you've thought of for Mastodon, we thought of it 5 years ago and gargel said no.

Whatever moderation you think is happening, it's not unless by unpaid labor. No one who wants it can afford proper safety.

Everyone running shit is wildly unqualified. Everyone who should be running shit has been harassed away or had their will to care beaten out of them.

Unless you know your admin personally, you are in for a bad time.

Meta. OpenAI. Google.

Your AI chatbot is not *hallucinating*.

It's bullshitting.

It's bullshitting, because that's what you designed it to do. You designed it to generate seemingly authoritative text "with a blatant disregard for truth and logical coherence," i.e., to bullshit.

This account is a strictly #intersex friendly account.

* I have a hard line, zero tolerance for #interphobia.
* I will block and report interphobes.
* I will refute interphobic bullshit.

If I block you here, I will do so on all other platforms where I know your account.

If you knew me IRL and turn out to be an interphobe, we're done.

:intersex_flag:

@dalias

I don't expect you to do anything about it. It's what it is.

You made a statement about the intent and purpose of the CC in response to my comment that it is a tool of suppression. I explained how and why it is so.

Now you're shifting the goalposts from the purpose of the CC to the "good intentions" of people who want to use it.

@glitch

The perils of being on an instance which actually adheres to the spec (i.e. 500 characters.

Given how many instances use the CC as their basis (specifically version 1.4), I can't join a lot of them. See the 24-part thread for why. So meh.

Holy shit. Someone I've known since the '90s just blocked me for the #intersex thread.

It did not take long at all for the first interphobe to come out of the woodwork following that 24 part beast on why the Contributor Covenant sucks.

Only two hours.

Mind you, on Twitter that sort of thing would bring out the interphobes in about two minutes. So I guess it's an improvement.

Question for people using screen readers:

Assuming proper camel-casing was used, can your screen reader pick up on the difference between the #SuperBowl and #SuperbOwl hashtags?

Well, that ought to set the cat amongst the pigeons ...

#NotSorry

@dazinism

I finally got around to addressing this in another thread.

Start here:

chaos.social/@adversary/109855

Warning: it's very long, but you need to read it all.

It should be obvious at the end of that why I do not believe the #ContributorCovenant can be salvaged or "made good."

Yes, the point made in post 19 of that thread absolutely applies to social.coop. Especially when you admit to driving minorities away during the course of adopting your CoC.

@dalias @nemobis @davidgerard

So, to get back to your interpretation of these policies; no, it is not and never was a tool for furthering human rights. It is, and always has been, a means of enforcing a very narrow and specific view of human diversity which enables protections for some while explicitly targeting others for discrimination.

It is objectively harmful and readily weaponised because it was always intended to be weaponised.

24/24

@dalias @nemobis @davidgerard

Finally, before circling back, this last part is not directed at anyone explicitly tagged anywhere in this thread, but to people who come across it later (which is likely with all the hashtags used and the thread should be seen and boosted): I have a hard line, zero tolerance for interphobia. I will block and report interphobes and I will refute interphobic bullshit (at least sometimes).

Though if you read this far, that should be obvious.
