Not that I think that the opinion of two guys at the top of a fundamentally misled and abusive institution should count more than that of anyone else. They have power they do not deserve, but it is one of the rare instances where someone uses power for a cause I support. The document is worth a read (if you skip all the Christian references) and reflects a much better understanding of AI than most AI policymakers seem to have. Sigh.

I did not expect to agree with the Catholic church on anything meaningful in my lifetime, but:

"Drawing an overly close equivalence between human intelligence and AI risks succumbing to a functionalist perspective, where people are valued based on the work they can perform. However, a person’s worth does not depend on possessing specific skills, cognitive and technological achievements, or individual success, but on the person’s inherent dignity"

It is great to see more and more discussion about the ideological links between tech/AI and fascism. However, it is framed as a US problem.

EU policy is increasingly permeated by the same ideas and similar language, in the form of transhumanist research (neurotechnology), effective altruists pushing the AI safety debate in universities and through think tanks to EU politicians, more money for space travel and a fetishisation of entrepreneurship and IQ (Macron's start-up state etc.).

Thank you for the insightful illustration of how a mindset of "lazy and dumb average consumers" leads to tech fascism because IT knowledge is assumed to make people superior. Democratic values require you, me, us to recognise that technology needs to serve human needs, not the intellectual stimulation of a programmer or an investor's wallet.
(however, still keen for you to add one more layer of concreteness, @tante)

It feels like everybody here on Mastodon must have seen it by now, so make sure to pass it on to your friends and family chats.

It is bizarre how the default has shifted to "people use genAI applications" and I am expected to explain why I do not use them, again and again.

I have around 10-20 different reasons, many of which are individually sufficient. I choose the ones I expect to resonate most with the person I am talking to.

But since using genAI is the default, they usually do not feel they have to engage with reasons for not using genAI...or maybe they would prefer to ask ChatGPT for a good response.

Ich bin ja sehr ungern nicht gegen Trump, doch Medikamentenpreise senken ist wichtig (auch ein Fascho-Huhn…). Sehr enttäuschend der @tagesschau -Artikel:
„Mit einem Umsatzrückgang in den USA steige zudem der Druck für Unternehmen, höhere Preise in anderen Industrienationen wie Deutschland zu erzielen.“

Pfizer, Novartis, GSK & Co haben jeweils solide ein- bis zweistellige Milliardengewinne pro Jahr. Der „Druck“ ist erfunden. Von einer Beratung.
