Most extreme example I saw was training a LLM to recognize odd numbers - what can be computed exactly with about one machine instruction, so 0.000000000001 Watt-Hours.

Most examples are less extreme, but the precision of the result is less than in the above, and it is difficult to recognize the difference to the real answers - especially for those who seek a quick answer.

So I shiver everytime I see a headline with "AI".

My critique is not that what-is-called-AI today (LLM based stuff) is power hungry. It is (in the server room of the University department where I work, I see that every day as we have a couple machines specifically used for AI research and training), but that's not the point.

My critique is that it is power hungry and mostly used to get approximate guesses for problems were we know exact (or at least better) answers already...
