@pmcdonald @bikenite thank you! I wonder if the one bike that prompted this question had a far back center of gravity due to the handlebar configuration. The problem is worse when I have a pannier on the back.

@realSiegfried @bikenite wow! That sounds like a scary injury. I am glad you have recovered and that the helmet helped.
@gcvsa One of my bikes is so unstable that any small perturbation makes the handlebar swing to one side or the other. This happens when leaning the bike against something or when walking it. I can try to hold it by the stem to prevent it from turning while I walk, but I still find it really hard to stop from turning and then falling over.
@meganL thank you for making it what it is, and taking part even during big life changes.
@bikenite A6. Personally, I look for a reasonable safety rating (passes standards, I guess?) and comfortable/light weight. I don't enjoy wearing heavy helmets. I like the circular adjustment dial in the back, though I guess most types of adjustments would be nice.
Something with comfortable straps is nice too. Some of the straps have been irritating when in contact with my chin/neck.
I'm not too particular about color.
I haven't tried any of the helmets with integrated lights. I like the idea, just haven't tried one.
I don't think I need a visor. In the past, I've bumped the visor into things and knocked it off many times.
That's it for tonight. Thanks for being a part of #BikeNite and asking, answering, reading and discussing.
Thank you for the questions! We have about 2-3 saved for next week. Please send more to fill out the 8-question queue, with the BikeNitePQ tag so I can find your post.
Reply, boost and favorite to keep it going. Thanks for being a part of this community. And you can follow #BikeNite, if you haven't yet.
@grammasaurus @wesley @bikenite Sigh, I'm sorry and I hope that it is changing for the better for you.
@wesley A5. Hmmm.. based on current school/work/other activities patterns.. I don't know if I've thoughtfully added this up before.
It looks like about 45 miles per week during the school year. Maybe similar during the summer, but it's more variable because the commute changes.
I rarely get recreational riding in, but I hope to change that. Without that, it looks looks like about 2250 miles per year (cool!), assuming some vacation time where I am not able to ride.
Last Q from @atrombone:
Q8. Does anyone have good rack (for carrying things) recommendations? I recently sold my old bike, bought a new one, and my LBS only had one rack to choose from. The arms are at different angles and now the panniers bump into the spokes. I'm looking for a rack that keeps them out of the spokes and allows me to put them a little further back to avoid heel strikes with my big feet.

@pete asks:
I found myself stuck in my highest gear ~20km from home yesterday and so sought out as flat a route as possible to ride home, repeatedly hopping off to walk anything that got too steep.
Q7. What do you do if you find yourself stranded mid-ride? Call for assistance? Walk? Public transport? Set up camp and live off foraged nuts and berries?

@cpm A3. I have a colleague who uses a small Insta360. I think it is the Insta360 Go 3S. It is pretty small and can mount at the forehead. It seems lightweight and is a little less noticeable than other cameras.
As @meganL mentions, sometimes it is beneficial to advertise that you have a camera.
Another option is the handlebar mount, but then your view is prone to camera shake. Having very good stabilization can help here.
Sunglass/eyeglass cameras might be a possibility for you too.
A friend is looking for their first new helmet in a while.
Q6. What would your considerations be for a new helmet, if you use one? What do you like?

@wesley asks:
Q5. How far/much do you cycle in typical a day/month/year? Is there anything preventing you from cycling more than you currently do?

@bikenite A1. Hello #BIkeNite I am in Oakland, CA as usual.
I probably spend 1/3-2/3 of my time riding sort of alone, and the rest of the time with a family member or with a friend who happens to be traveling the same way at the same time. (School dropoff/pickup, kids activities, spontaneously seeing a friend headed somewhere)
@kimu asks:
I ran into an older woman at the farmers market last weekend who said she & her husband used to bike a lot but no longer do. Husband has Parkinson’s & she didn’t seem confident biking alone or perhaps is physically not up to it.
Q4. Besides considering a trike/quad (hard to find locally), is there anything else you’d suggest for her or her husband? I was really struck by her expression & tone - she clearly really misses it.
@cpm asks:
Q3. Do you know of any bicycle helmet cams that do not look like "standard" helmet cameras?
The 1st helmet cams I saw were small tube (lipstick) cams mounted inside helmet suspension on the 'eye-line' for near-true PoV for football players long ago.
Opinions vary on how silly:notsilly helmets appear in the 1st place, yet adding this strange, rather awkward (imo) box to all that isn't ideal (again, imo)

Q2. How do you stop your front wheel from turning when walking with or leaning your bike? One of my bikes seems geometrically unstable and the front wheel turns at the slightest touch. Then the bike falls. I've seen stabilizer springs. Do you have one, or have you added one as an accessory?
Are there certain geometries/component types that make this more likely, and can this be easily changed on your cycle?

Our intro question:
Q1. Where are you posting from today? Do you typically ride by yourself? With friends/family or others you know? With others you don't know? With pets?
Our community discussion #BikeNite starts in about an hour, at 4pm Pacific (UTC-7). I post cycle-y questions w/ Q1, Q2, Q3; if you answer w/ A1, A2, A3, etc, it's easier to match.
Tag #BikeNite if you want your answer to be more discoverable; follow it to see questions & replies in your feed. Boost & reply to replies to keep the discussion going.
(You can follow the BikeNiteQ tag so questions are easier to find, but don't include this in your answers)
@cpm ok, it will be in the queue, but for next week. This week got full again! Thank you!
