interesting! My ISP offered access to newsgroups via their mirror server. Of course they'd filter all the binary groups and anything illegal. But it was for free and they also offered support for their customers. That was early 2000s. It died in the late 2000s. I like to belief the usenet (for non piracy usecases) still exists but it might be a more niche thing than the fediverse by now 🤔
Capitalist Web 2.0 etc. have taken over because, like @Edent wrote: better UX and easier access

Using @dino, @gajim and conversations(Android). They all work together nicely with my selfhosted instance of @prosodyim

While these clients do not support IRC natively, I (sometimes) use biboumi as a bridge to IRC. Which has the nice thing that it kind of is a bouncer and it enables any xmpp client to use IRC 🙃

Btw: does pidgin Implement OMEMO yet? Last time I checked the issue was still open.

@raiden_fediverse @schnedan @gerd naja. XMPP dient anderen Usecases als eMail. Eins der Ps in XMPP steht für Presence zB. und es ist eher auf direkte Kommunikation ausgelegt, während eMails auch nach 12h noch zugestellt werden.

Klar: wo zieht man die Grenze ob man einen neuen Standard braucht oder nicht (zB. Hätte es Matrix gebraucht wo es XMPP gab?)

Schön ist es nur das es einen offenen(!) Standard gibt der einem(Wahl)Freiheiten gibt.

Wenn das "E-Mail" (smtp?)sein soll, dann halt E-Mail...

Apparently most Websites today neither offer a "print" function, nor offer such a stylesheet to facilitate your own efforts of conserving information.

I guess this is mostly driven by commercial interests and preserving "IP".

I use to PDF print recipes and I'm always frustrated that it is such a hard task to get it nicely fit on a DIN A4 sheet (because I also print on paper sometimes) without clutter...

Saying there is discordance between xmpp people and matrix people about what works stable/usable. But when its about e.g. products like discord or WhatsApp there is unity that they are worse and not a valid option. And that e.g. discord users don't even realize there is anything to fight about (because IMO 99% are oblivious xmpp and matrix even exist).
