interesting! My ISP offered access to newsgroups via their mirror server. Of course they'd filter all the binary groups and anything illegal. But it was for free and they also offered support for their customers. That was early 2000s. It died in the late 2000s. I like to belief the usenet (for non piracy usecases) still exists but it might be a more niche thing than the fediverse by now 🤔
Capitalist Web 2.0 etc. have taken over because, like @Edent wrote: better UX and easier access
