I can't believe I'm still having this conversation, but I'll say it again:

EVERYTHING created, managed, operated, bought, sold, used, consumed by human beings is "political". And it doesn't whether or not it's "free as in speech" or "free as in beer". If you ever find something that's "not political" that doesn't involve like pure math or science facts of the universe, it's because you're not looking hard enough and considering the people element involved. What are the missing stairs. The opportunity costs. The people who otherwise would have been there who aren't. The people who get attention and the people who don't. Why nothing is a "meritocracy" because merit is an artificial construct created and judged ... You guessed it ... By people. Who have implicit and explicit biases. How often do you judge things not on their own merits, but by "popularity", which people have endorsed it, how many stars or downloads or followers they have. It's people all the way down.

American Oligarchs could be brought to their knees if everyone: a) Stopping using Facebook b) Stopped using X c) Stopped shopping on Amazon. d) Stopped using Google. Yeah, I'm not holding by breath.

Hey, cis dudes. I need you to show up as allies at trans #pride events this month. Don’t make a big deal out of it. Don’t expect to win awards for it. Don’t hit on people. Don’t make it about you. Just swell our numbers.

And stand between us and the cops and transphobes, please.

#boost welcome.

I'm actually optimistic that the generation of kids who grow up with LLMs will internalize the lesson that confident authority has absolutely no correlation with competence or correctness. That's a world I'd love to live in.

Honestly I think there's a disconnect between LLM proponents when it comes to code and the rest of us. They see code as a purely mechanical thing, and so ripe for automation. To them claims of artistry and craft are something to roll your eyes at, arrogance from senior engineers who think too highly of themselves

Meanwhile said senior engineers have the decades of experience to know how much of programming relies on artistry and craft, how much of it is fundamentally a creative endeavor

Wow. They're calling the rise of AA, B and Indie games "deprofessionalization" now.

A lot of middle-men like large publishers and management are supposedly losing employees because small teams and just regular individuals have been learning to make good games, raising the bar and lowering the entry barrier.

To which I say: good fucking riddance. Cancerously oversized AAA publisher establishment needs to go the way of the TV in the wake of online video: slow, undignified extinction.

compost.party is a repurposed smartphone running on solar power, a 'web server pieced together from scraps, humming in the attic of an apartment building.'

Announcing: justaqrcode.com.

Tired of "free" QR code generators that are full of ads and trackers, that share your data, and that want to sell you something? Me too. Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

Capitalism is an engine that fuels "growth" by fostering unsustainable practices, depleting vital resources, degrading ecologies and worsening climate change.

By placing profit before social wellbeing, it turbo-charges income inequality, leaving many unable to meet basic needs while wealth accumulates upwards. It drives worker exploitation, sacrificing long-term sustainability for short-term gains for a few. All the while undermining communities and deepening social divides.

It's a death cult.

It just clicked that if my articles are properly tagged up with categories, dates etc in the RSS, I can use the same feed XML to spin off as many XSLT files as I want to make my archive fully browsable without having to separately generate static lists for each such property. Maybe it’s also possible to spin off separate RSS feeds based on categories/keywords this way? Adding these to my itches, they would be pretty neat.

Next time you hear someone say, "We have a shortage of ____" (teachers, nurses, a particular STEM role, whatever), think about the first time you heard someone say that about that role.

If it was longer ago than the time it takes to train a new entrant, get a certification, or complete a relevant degree, then there is no shortage of personnel; there's a shortage of willingness to pay people what their work is worth.
