Gisteren speelde ik muziek bij de inhuldiging van de nieuwe straatnaam. Door de fusie van de gemeente moesten er enkele straten van naam veranderen. De straat draagt nu de naam van een verzetstrijdster uit onze gemeente.

Building an instrument is always exciting. Step by step, you get closer to the result. You only discover how it sounds, feels and plays when it is finished. And just when you finally put strings on it... you fall ill, of course. After a week, I was finally able to test it. The sound is powerful and warm. The fingerboard is perfect in terms of intonation and playability. A good “hommel” and a happy builder/player. This “épinette” model is partly inspired by the northern French epinettes.

On the Epinette I made, there is a sound hole on the front of the instrument. Never seen this on any other epinette before. The reason I did this, is because I hope sound will be projected towards the front instead of only upwards. Normally I would test the instrument today, but still sick. The test will be for another day…

Finally she’s ready and ready to be played. But not today… Sick in bed today, but hopefully tomorrow better again, and playing this brand new instrument.

Het project ‘Epinette’ gaat de goede richting uit. Nog een aantal zaken in orde te brengen dat zeker. Maar, het moment waarop de snaren erop mogen komt dichterbij.

Le projet “Epinette” avance dans la bonne direction. Il reste encore des choses à mettre en ordre, c'est certain. Mais le moment où les cordes pourront être posées se rapproche.

Last Thursday we fitted the mics in this absolute delight. The dulcimer is made by Michel Terlinck. The back of the instrument was not yet fitted so we could try different positions for the elements. And even though the instrument isn’t finished yet, it sounded truly great.
