As expected, questioning something as fundamental as the Japanese baseline grid could not be achieved without the solid technical skills of Masataka Hattori and @zacharyquinnscheuren 😎🧰

And as with every typeface family, many more people were involved behind the scenes.

My role in Momochidori was designing the Latin part, which now has been released as “Chidori”. There’s a bit more flexibility in drawing the Latin (since I don’t have to deal with heavy ideographs), so the axes are more extreme. In Chidori, it’s possible to go heavier, lighter, and tighter. The variable axes makes the family fun to use – I enjoyed making these samples, in which I reproduced signs seen in my surroundings.

Deep down I really wanna have a booth at an art book fair somewhere in Asia and just be on tour… the only problem is I have no print ideas yet. So far I only made one postcard for New Year 2025. Long way to go 😅

@dantescanline @tyalie Thank you for featuring the video :) I haven’t come across a similar video—where someone walks through a city and reflects on type in public space—in other languages yet. But physical events like “typewalks” often happen in different cities for various scripts, especially around type-related gatherings. If you’ve seen anything similar elsewhere, feel free to share—I’d love to see it.

@FontsInUse I worked with Studio Marcus Kraft (marcuskraft.com) to create a series of contextual rules that would automatically create a pleasing undulation of peaks and valleys as words are typed, taking into account the presence of ascenders, descenders, and diacritics. Here’s a video of the contextual alternates in action!

I am proud of @boom, who gave her first #TEDx talk at Thammasat University in Bangkok today! Titled #Thaipography, Boom’s talk made the audience aware how important archives and historical research are for typeface designers.

Another sad day in Bangkok. My family and I are safe, but many people were trapped under the collapsed construction site, and many had to walk over 30 km home due to the lack of transportation. Many high-rise buildings, poorly built yet home to so many, are now at risk. They say the aftershock is coming. I feel sad, yet fully awake. Once again, Bangkok never makes me feel safe.
