Hello #booktodon and #publiclibrary friends. How do you imagine the library of the future? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
- What kind of place will it be/how will it look like?
- Who will you meet there?
- What will be offered (media, activities, etc.)?
Skipping face to face #dnd5e tonight because the place we convene, the local #library is closed for the #Juneteenth holiday #ttrpg
“In my division of 22 FT employees, we had to fill 9 positions (some internal promotions that created vacancies, etc.) – that level of turnover just isn’t sustainable”
Please note: This is an anonymous response to an online survey; I do not have any way of contacting the respondent or verifying responses. Their answers may reflect good, bad, or middling hiring practices. I invite you to take what’s useful and leave the rest. If you are someone who hires Library, Archives or other LIS workers, please consider giving your own opinion by filling out the survey here.

Do you have any other comments, for job hunters, other people who hire, about the survey, or for Emily (the survey author)?
I’ve had to hire a stupid number of people the past 3 years and it is EXHAUSTING. It’s hard to maintain a positive attitude for recruiting while also trying to cover the responsibilities created by the vacancies. The survey has just reminded me of that. In my division of 22 FT employees, we had to fill 9 positions (some internal promotions that created vacancies, etc.) – that level of turnover just isn’t sustainable. I know it’s beyond the scope of your study, but it’s a real issue.

Taken on Wednesday, 18 June, 2025 from 15:14 to 16:26 with Samsung Galaxy A05 at Tikala Ares Sub-district, Tikala District, Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Huh, in contrast to the Manado City Library and Archives, in here the service is bad but the collection is large. Sadly, many librarians who have known me since childhood have retired, they were real librarians. Anyway, guess which country map is on the page of the book behind me in the first photo (hint: historical sovereign state).
I borrowed two books on my visit this time, loan period is one week, so I should return it on Wednesday, 25 June, 2025. Initially they said the loan period would only be three days but I insisted on one week, finally one week. Before I came again in 2023 the loan period was two weeks and I actually preferred that. Ah but that's okay, so every week I will go to the provincial library and read those old encyclopaedias.
I read many books there, especially encyclopaedia books and those are from 1960s, lovely. I was a bit annoyed when I finished reading and wanted to return the books. Some civil servants there told me not to return the books and leave them on the table. When they aren't looking I return the thick books because I don't want them to misclassify them especially if I want to read them again later. I just left some thin books on the table.
My 1st visit to the North Sulawesi Provincial Library and Archives in 2025. Last time I visited there was in July 2023 to make a new membership there, it was my first visit since 2019. It's great to be able to visit and borrow books here again, even though the service has declined since 2019. But even so, I am grateful that their book collection is still relatively good especially the reference books, as in the past when I was little.
The book return and sorting machine at the #Hamburg Zentralbibliothek is pretty cool, even if you can't see as much of it as you used to.
