Passionate about #programming, #music, #RockClimbing, #woodworking; happily working on infrastructure at the best company I've known in my 13+ years in tech. Thrilled about the growth of the #fediverse and looking forward to engaging with folks about engineering and beyond. (bigots not welcome on my TL)

Okay, who's running Mastodon on kubernetes? Getting back to the helm chart that was created but curious to hear people's experience with performance, ease of upgrades, etc? Thanks!

thoughtbot celebrates its 20th anniversary today! In honor of that, we put together a book with 20 of our most popular blog posts. It's absolutely gorgeous! Get yours here: thoughtbot.com/resources/20-fo

We're in the process of shifting thoughtbot.social to a Kubernetes cluster via our flightdeck platform.

Been exciting to learn more about the stack and how the structure we use with clients will facilitate scalability, proper monitoring, and security best practices. Learning lots throughout the process :)

We're starting with a staging environment but will be planning out a migration in the near future. Expect an upcoming blog post about our experience coming soon!

Very much enjoying learning about Rust. Seems like a great language with a solid community ethos. C was the first language I learned so I'm excited to be getting into a modern systems language with some excellent design principles! #rust #programming

@vguido so sorry for yall's loss; take care Victoria

Sometimes I'm overwhelmed by the ways in which #DevOps ™️ deviates from my many years of experience doing #sysadmin work, but other times I find the many ways in which 15 years of living and breathing #linux informs my work in really enjoyable ways.

Much has changed, but much remains the same. ❤️ the powerful simplicity of the Unix philosophy.

…Not once did anyone, including senior leadership, suggest punitive action. Nobody blamed the engineer. Instead, we all focused on how our systems could allow something like this to happen by accident.

Culture is incredibly important in the workplace. This engineer was blaming himself for causing an outage, but the rest of us were blaming ourselves for allowing it to happen. If we acknowledge that humans aren’t perfect, that they’re well-intentioned, we move past blame and towards resiliency… 🧵

@BarrettClark @purinkle this definitely rings true for me. #ActiveRecord is great for so many basic things but I recall when writing #SQL of sufficient complexity that trying to cobble it into an ORM ended up being more trouble than it's worth

@uid0 Gaia GPS has a nice fearure that lets you view (and of course download for offline use) cell reception layers for various carriers. I can't speak to how precise it is, but it's something I've found very useful when out in the sticks.

Lock in GPS and find good intersections between cell coverage and dispersed camping spots...

Another way I've done it is just find state / national forest areas I'm interested in, stake out a nearby town with a good place to work (either a chill pub or restaurant with wifi) and just kick it there during work hours and head back to camp after.

However you manage that, enjoy the outdoor time with your pup!

@sanitybit @ThinkstCanary lol this is feeling timely:

Similarly, this is why I will never trust any hosted password manager. Like... why? Pass ftw (passwordstore.org/)

@vguido @thoughtbot simply flantastic

:flan_butterfly: my greatest achievement so far this year @thoughtbot is getting cute custom emojis added to our mastodon :flan_blush:

CICD pipelines with tools like Github Actions are great for use cases where certain collaboration and complexity require that ecosystem; but I've really come to appreciate simple automated deploy setups with git hooks and basic bash scripts.

Scenario: setup a remote repo via ssh access, add a post-receive hook that triggers a deploy script that pulls latest code and restarts a system service...

No external dependencies, high level of security, quick to get running, elegant in its simplicity. For side projects I've found this to be an extremely satisfying automated process that takes a push to main and translates that into a production deploy. Very convenient. #Sysadmin #SysadminTips #automation #programming #DevOps #git

Forgot about the incredible flan emoji set. @pamela will forever be a fediverse emoji legend. :flan_cool: :flan_guns:

Had an amazing weekend with my best friend and pup snow shoeing around beatiful Pacific Northwest national forest area.

Good food, nice hikes, zero cell reception, just warm fires and lots of reading time. #snow #PacificNorthwest #washington #oregon #DogsOfMastodon #NewYear

@vguido nice! Hamachi?

Update: oops, if I had looked at the alt text you thoughtfully added I would not have made a fool of myself like this 😅

Really excited about @thoughtbot hosting Mastodon, and the small hand I had in that.

S/O to @chris and @vguido for championing this project!

@mina @thoughtbot appreciate you too Mina! So enjoy cranking on projects with you

@thoughtbot lol happened to watch this video as I was listening to this in the background (so the audio was overlapping (and blending surprisingly well)):

At the end of the year, we come together for Ralphapalooza, a time to celebrate, have fun, & build something as a group. Here are highlights from this year. 🎉 youtu.be/WH95umu-hLo

Looking forward to more impactful projects, more learning, and just the right amount of silliness in 2023. 🤖
