Today’s Steamed Veggies update is journal comics from May. You can read them here, and find more comics on steamedveggies.artfulhypothesi

A four panel comic rendered in pink and green. In the first panel, Emily lays in bed, partially covered by a blanket, squinting at the sunlight streaming in through a window with blinds. The narration begins, a verse from the Mountain Goats’s song “Cold Milk Bottle”: “despite your best efforts I feel alright.” In the second panel, Emily stands reflected in a mirror, putting sunscreen on her face. She smiles with some exhaustion in her eyes, but also with softness. The narration continues: “despite the force of your fury I feel alright.” In the third panel, Emily stands outside, looking up into the sky. The narration continues: “despite your random acts of violence—“ In the fourth panel, Emily closes her eyes and lets out a sigh, crossing her arms behind her head, content. The narration concludes: “I feel alright.”A four panel comic rendered in pink and green. In the first panel, a hand reaches over and opens the tab on a can of beer. The narration begins: “This month has not been easy on me.” In the second panel, we zoom out to see Emily, reclining on the couch, holding the beer in her hand. Eyes closed, she lets out a sigh. The narration continues: “Though, granted, I also haven’t been east on myself.” In the third panel, we zoom in on Emily’s head in profile, looking off into the distance with exhaustion in her eyes. The narration continues: “Self-loathing is, frankly, such an egotistical thing. Do I truly think I know better than the people who love me? That all of them are wrong so I can be right?” In the fourth panel, we see the top of the beer can, carbonation sending specks of liquid into the air. “Maybe,” the narration concludes, “maybe framing it like that will help for once.”

A photo of a drawing in a sketchbook. It’s a cartoon drawing of Emily, a woman with brown hair, glasses, wearing a blue tank top and eating a Mickey ice cream bar. She has her eye closed and is holding up a peace sign. The text around her reads “Patreon Summer Update 6/23/23”

I’m taking a break from Steamed Veggies this month, so I’m instead updating my Patreon once a week with sketchbook stuff and other noodlin’! The first post is up now! My Patreon is just two bucks a month and it’s the best way to directly support my work! patreon.com/corruptedgem

A photo of a drawing in a sketchbook, framed with various markers and pens. The drawing starts with "Patreon Summer Update" written at the top, with an illustration of Emily, a brown haired woman with glasses wearing a large fantasy-like cloak and holding a sack over her shoulder on a stick, saying "something a little different!" Text under the illustration reads "6/16/23."

Today's Steamed Veggies update is COOL TEEN MOTHMAN #2, a zine that debuted at last week's Chicago Zine Fest! You can read the whole thing on my website here: steamedveggies.artfulhypothesi

The intro panel for a six panel comic following a character called Cool Teen Mothman, illustrated as a bean-shaped blob with wings, red eyes, fuzzy antenna, and a backwards red baseball cap. Here we see Cool Teen Mothman's head, wings spread out, with a speech bubble with a heart coming out from where his mouth would be.

Hello everyone! I’ll be tabling at Chicago Zine Fest this Saturday! Table C12! The event is free to attend so come by and say hi and check out all of the other incredible artists tabling as well!

A graphic map of Plumbers Union Hall for Chicago Zine Fest. Various groups of tables are labeled, and table c12 is highlighted. There’s a cartoon of a short-haired woman with glasses pointing at the table, and handwritten text on either side of the drawing reads “CZF 2023! Table C12!”

Today's Steamed Veggies update is a selection of journal comics from April. You can read them here or at the Steamed Veggies website: steamedveggies.artfulhypothesi

A four panel comic, rendered in green and magenta. In the first panel, Emily lays in a bed, covers pulled up to her shoulders. Her expression is tired and worried. The narration begins, "In a bed that is not mine in a place I used to call home and sometimes still do, I feel incredibly small and helpless.

In the second panel, we see a nightstand with an LCD clock and some belonging strewn atop it. The clock reads 5:11 PM. The narration continues, "I am tired. There has to be hope because I cannot imagine a world without it but I am having the hardest time finding it right now."

In the third panel, the silhouettes of houses and trees dot the landscape as the sun sets, light reflecting off of the whispy clouds in the sky. The narration continues, "I want to hope for days where I don't worry about my health, the health of my family and friends. Days where the word "pandemic" doesn't even cross my thoughts. Days where my jaw doesn't ache from clenching it involuntarily all day. Days that have to be ahead, still, still."

In the last panel, Emily turns over in bed, her arm crossed over her face as she lets out a sigh. The narration concludes, "I want to hope."A four panel comic, rendered in green and magenta. In the first panel, Emily stands on a second floor overhang, a window to the cul-de-sac behind her. She has her eyes closed and is dressed in pajamas: a sloppy shirt and cloth pants. Wafts of steam creep up to the second floor from below. The narration begins, "Woke up to a familiar scent," as Emily garbles out "'s smells good," and a voice answers "it's onion!"

In the second panel, we see a bowl filled with a meat and veg mixture, with a bottle of seasoning next to it. The narration explains: "Stuffed cabbage prep, a long, pungent process for a food I used to a void whenever it was an option."

In the third panel, a single cabbage leaf is visible. The narration goes on, "now, it's become a symbol of sort."

In the fourth panel, a lid is lifted up on a slow cooker, revealing rows of cooking cabbage rolls. The narration concludes, "of safety, of comfort. Of a place that will always be held for me."A four panel comic, rendered in green and magenta. In the first panel, Emily sits on a couch, arm reached around her head and rubbing her neck exhaustedly. The narration begins "Been a long few days," as Emily adds on "it's almost like an anxiety attack takes a lot outta ya."

In the second panel, Emily sketches away in an iPad, curled up on the couch with her legs under a blanket, looking determined. The narration continues "I feel like I've been playing catch-up for months and Monday was the stress coming to a head."

In the third panel, we zoom in on Emily's hand holding a stylus as she sketches onto the screen. The narration continues, "And all of that pressure, it's just me. Old expectations from a world that doesn't exist anymore."

In the fourth panel, Emily reaches out and stretches her arms and hands, a look of contentment on her face. The narration concludes "can I figure out how to better enjoy the ride in this one then?"

a few warm up sketches from the other day

A sketch of Dripfang from Hello from the Magic Tavern. He is sitting down, leg kicked up on an invisible surface, dressed in a long flowing robe with fur trim on the collar, and his usual v neck tank and black pants/boots. He holds a stemless wine glass in his hands as he looks off frame smugly.A sketch of Baron Ragoon from Hello from the Magic Tavern. He is standing with his arms folded behind his back, looking off to the side as he addresses an unseen conversation partner. His hair curls over his shoulders, and he wears a vest with a long sleeve shirt with rolled up sleeves, showing off his arm tattoos. A cravat completes the ensemble.A sketch of Dripfang from Hello from the Magic Tavern. He’s looking off to the side with his eyebrow raised, his hair pulled back with a headband, wearing a sleeveless v-neck shirt. He wipes his hands off on a cloth as he says “Here’s the thing—when you have a passion project and you’re your own boss, you can tell yourself to fuck off and you’re fired whenever you want.”A sketch of Baron Ragoon from Hello From the Magic Tavern. He’s dressed in a shirt and vest with a cravat, eyes closed and slightly tiling his head. His word balloons are broken into various overlapping phrases: they are positioned to fill in the blank between “about” and “ago.” The phrases fully read “about two score and six bortnights ago—“ “about seven moon dances ago—“ and “about a month of flernsdays ago—“

A three panel, full color comic.

In the first panel, Emily, dressed as Joker from Persona 5, stands in front of a plain red background, with a swoosh of white behind her. She poses dramatically as she says, "Man, I'm having such a good time with Persona 5 so far! The gameplay's fun, and the UI design is surprisingly intuitive! I wonder what the first dungeon's gonna be like..."

In the second panel, Emily looks out over some hills to a castle, fairly plain-looking and textured with bricks. Over head, in the red background, text reads "Welcome to Sex Pest Castle" with an extra "ooooh" off to the side.

In the third panel, Emily stands in the corner, unimpressed and hiding her disgust. Overhead, a word bubble leading off panel reads "the funkiest soundtrack you've ever done heard" with music notes flying off of it.

A three panel, full color comic. The first panel is labeled "The bar for accomplishments in 2015." In it, Emily, with long brown hair and oval glasses, stands in front of a CRT monitor in an art gallery. The monitor is showing a game start screen, and a controller is plugged in nearby. Emily motions to the monitor and says, "For my BFA thesis project, I've created a game that explores my struggles with depression and anxiety. An entire year of work and research!"

The second panel is labeled "The bar for accomplishments now." In it, Emily, with her current short hair and rectangular glasses, gleefully pops the cork on a bottle of wine, yelling over her shoulder "I GOT THE CORK OUT OF THE WINE BOTTLE WITHOUT DESTROYING IT!" to Em, who gives a silent thumbs up in response.

In the third panel, Emily, still in present day, sits on a couch, now holding a glass on wine, looking directly at the viewer. "Look I know I've done this joke before but I'm really excited about the wine, ok," she says.

Today's Steamed Veggies comic collects journal comics from March. You can read them here or at the Steamed Veggies website: steamedveggies.artfulhypothesi

A four-panel comic rendered in magenta and green. In the first panel, the silhouette of a tree is seen before outlines of buildings. Two birds tweet softly on its branches. The narration begins: "it still feels like winter." In the second panel, Emily lies on a couch, covered almost entirely by a blanket. She opens her eyes tentatively to the noise. The narration continues: "but this morning I can hear birds in the tree outside our front window." In the third panel, Emily sits up from the couch, stretching her arms and back, eyes closed. The narration continues: "I am going to walk down to the used bookstore this afternoon. Work on some comics. Maybe make something nice for dinner." In the fourth panel, we zoom in on her hand, reaching up toward the ceiling. The narration concludes: "I am through the hardest part of the season, and I'm ready to start flying again."A four panel comic, rendered in magenta and green. In the first panel, we see a tight shot of Emily sitting on a couch, holding a beer, surrounded by friends happily chatting. She laughs. The narration begins “lately I’ve wished I could have a moment to view myself from the outside.” In the second panel, Emily is seen from the chest up, facing the camera. There are silhouettes of her behind her, growing smaller as they fade into the distance. The narration continues: “see the version of myself that everyone else does.” In the third panel, a single hand reaches out from the right side of the panel. Three other hands reach out from the left to meet it. The narration continues: “would I see that she is deserving of the love so freely given?” In the fourth and final panel, Emily is clutching both of her hands together in front of her chest. Light pours from them, seeping through her fingers. The narration concludes: “that I am, that I am.”A four panel comic, rendered in magenta and green. In the first panel, Emily sits up on the couch, legs covered by a blanket, looking at her phone with her glasses off. Her expression is tired and concerned. The narration begins: "Is this just a self-esteem problem or does it all run deeper." In the second panel, we zoom in on her phone screen, showing a search for "treatments for depression." The narration continues: "Something with my brain that I just can't think myself out of." In the third panel, we zoom in on her phone screen even more as she scrolls through a page. The narration takes up most of the space, but under her thumb, we see an article talking about the use of medication in depression treatment. The narration continues: "Or is this all simply learned, and the process of unlearning is THIS slow and painful and winding." In the fourth panel, Emily rubs her eye, still sitting on the couch. Her narration concludes: "I don't even know how to begin to figure that out."

your honor I have known morel for less than twenty four hours and I would fight an army for her

A sketch of Dripfang and Morel the Mushroom from the Hello From the Magic Tavern spin-off, Masters of Mayhem, as well as a stand-alone sketch of Morel. Morel is a little mushroom with stubby hands and legs. She has a big smile and rosy cheeks. Her cap is brain-like, based off of the wrinkled cap of a false morel. In the sketch with Dripfang, she’s sitting on his shoulder, looking out from his coat fur with an expression of open mouthed shock. Dripfang—who has pale green skin, short black hair, a mustache and goatee, and snake scales on his cheeks, ear tips, and backs of his hands, wearing a green coat with gold trim and a large fur collar—looks at her slyly.

scene: the two dorks you keep running into/are seemingly stuck with are definitely about to ruin this fancy conference, but at least you can get drunk on champagne in the meantime

An illustration of Bullexa and Squibbert from the Hello from the Magic Tavern spin-off, Masters of Mayhem. They chat with glasses of champagne next to them. Bullexa is a large bipedal bull, with brown fur, fringe bangs over one eye, horns with dark brown tips with orbs of light hovering around them, a nose ring, and a halo behind her head. She’s wearing a toga that is pinned at her shoulder with a large gold disc. She holds Squibbert, who is a small green frog with yellow spots, in one of her hooves.

A full color comic. In the first panel, Emily stands in front of an orange gradient background. She holds up a large iced coffee triumphantly. "Alright, the coffee maker at work has been broken for weeks. It's time to employ 32 ounces of desperate measures!" she says.

In the second panel, Emily is sitting in her cubicle in front of a laptop, but her and her word bubbles are blurred and vibrating. "oh," she remarks, "bad idea."

In the third panel, a thought bubble with Emily's internal monologue version of herself floats above the still vibrating Emily, who is now eating a piece of pizza. "After all this," her internal self scolds, "you're eating cold pizza for lunch?" Emily replies "don't look at me" as her internal self continues, "you're almost thirty, your constitution can't handle this!"
