Moved to @crussel!

Game dev since 2004, currently working on a casual iOS game about archaeology. A game that really needs a name!

Posts about , , , and a fair amount of ill-advised top-of-mind nonsense.

Tonight my car decided it wanted to call breakdown assistance, while I was driving. After the first ring it hung up. Then it called again, then hung up. I couldn’t prevent it. It carried on like this for half an hour, before finally giving up.

At least it was breakdown and not emergency services. I would not want to have to explain that.

Gonna just make games in EGA from now on so I can a) stop endlessly faffing with colours and b) deny responsibility for the colours being hideous

It’s bad enough “AI” is being shoved into everything without every startup on the planet DDOSing the whole web. Your product doesn’t suck because it doesn’t have up-to-the-second training data, it sucks because mindlessly regurgitating data isn’t useful

@reidrac Yep it's becoming a huge problem! The Git forge I run for Merveilles is often under attack by AI bots, and they completely hammer the server when they do.

Like you say, having dynamic content is a problem (also heise.de/en/news/AI-bots-paral ) and for me Forgejo forks off at least one git process every time, so it's particularly heavy.

I'm glad this is getting discussed more and more, it'll help push back on attitudes saying we're naïve for trying to fight back (hackaday.com/2025/01/23/trap-n).

Great post, @alex!

@psychicparrot42 one of the very late entries in the Dizzy franchise

Think this weekend’s task will be migrating to gamedev.place. Social has always been a bit flaky but it’s been particularly bad recently. I guess as the de facto default instance it must bear the brunt every time there’s an influx of new users.

If you're in the Greater Manchester, UK area, the Science and Industry Museum are looking for volunteers to help with their Power Up! gaming exhibition: scienceandindustrymuseum.org.u

If you're interested, they have an application form at ce0111li.webitrent.com/ce0111l

@sinbad I'm making a non-free-to-play game for mobile, we all make our (stupid) choices

What's everyone's favourite game soundtracks to work to? I could do with some recommendations. Currently listening to Pillars of Eternity and yesterday was mostly Unreal Tournament.

It’s so nice when “support” is an actual helpful human. Filled the feedback comments with effusive praise and a polite suggestion they deserve a pay rise.

Resisted the urge to add “of course, when you inevitably get bought out by a megacorp it’ll all go to heck” 🤐

I can’t open the PC bits cupboard without the site manager performing an inspection. She always declares everything in order, which is funny because I can never find the USB cable I want

@calicoday ALT+drag works for me on Mac, but that is with an external keyboard and mouse - wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work with a trackpad (the trackpad is even more forgotten than CMD!)

@calicoday yeah, I love that half the shortcuts on Mac use CMD and half use CTRL. Clearly a memo didn't reach all departments :D But this one works on Mac!

@psychicparrot42 yep, me too (and I'd actually argue that's a flaw in Epic's approach to visual programming - amongst many other issues, flow quickly becomes non-obvious in BP). I try to use them the way I'd use scripting in a 'traditional' engine - just for tweaking. But because the power's *right there* it's hard to resist!

I just have to remind myself of a contract I did once where a coder had written an obscenely complex BP, which they arranged in a gigantic spiral...

Been using for years and only recently did I realise you can copy and paste properties with Shift+LMB/RMB. So much faster!

@psychicparrot42 totally. Too many times I've let it get to the point where there are multiple BPs depending on each other, and you come to port one to C++ only to realise you'll have to do all of them. The days I've lost...

That said I did catch myself going all in on a blueprint this morning and had a moment of Good Sense, so hopefully I'm getting better 😆
