I started as a senior scientist at the Division of Microbial ecology at the University of Vienna last week.

Looking forward to exciting science with great people.

I was at the #EESSymposium at @embl this week.

Here's a link to a twitter thread with all my conference notes of the week:

RT @lundpa
I expect everyone knows about this fluorescent protein database apart from me, but in case you don't, it's wonderful.

At the Cellular mechanics of symbiosis symposium
@embl for the next 4 days. Will try my hand at live-tweeting the exciting talks ahead! #EESSymbiosis Will do this mostly on twitter.

@alexcc if you’re still on twitter, lead author Joshua Mills (handle @joshmattmills) might be able to give more info there. Not sure whether he’s on here, but don’t think so

2023-03-06

@alexcc we picked up some very distant bacterial homologs (6 i think) as part of the dataset construction, but removed them after initial phylogenetic analysis because they were on super long branches. This one thus seems Archaeal, but wouldn’t exclude related mechanisms in bacteria.

@christoph_STCmicrobeblog i can take very little credit for this work, just happened to be able to add a piece to the puzzle with my expertise when it was already a long way done

2023-03-06

@alexcc to the second question. This protein in its current form (as linked to the EV trait) doesn't seem to be ancestral to archaea (let alone Archaea & Bacteria) but I don't have a good sense where this family sits in the context of the entire superfamily, and whether other superfamily members have equivalent functions. ie, more work needed, as always :)

2023-03-06

@alexcc for this one we chose to stick to a narrow set of homologous sequences, to be as sure as we can that they are indeed functionally equivalent, as the protein bioinformatics is in support of the experimental data.

In constructing that dataset it becomes obvious that these are part of a much larger superfamily, and form a distinct group within them. Then to your question: I don't know how they relate to the Euk Ras proteins at this point.

Very excited to share this wonderful study led by
Joshua Mills and Susanne Erdmann at the MPI Bremen, showing RNA transfer in archaeal extracellular vesicles. Big congrats to all involved!
