The Anarchist Bookfair in London is almost here (12th October)

A celebration of all things anarchist.

The Bookfair exists to support radical struggles against capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism and ecological destruction - and especially those fighting for a liberated London based on mutual aid and freedom for all.

This year we have discussions, music, films, workshops, merch, skill-shares, food, campaign stalls, a kids space, and of course lots and lots of lovely books! It's not just for anarchists either, everyone* is welcome to come and have a nose around. Who knows, you might even leave an anarchist!

*Not cops, transphobes, etc.

One of the stones from Castlerigg stone circle, about 4500 years old.

The field used to be plowed right up to the circle edge. It is believed that an outer stone was removed and placed near a stile at the field edge, to avoid plough damage.

A two metre high monolith stone, with grassland and pretty fells in the distance. The grass is dotted with yellow flowers, and the sky is grey.

Miles Davis - Get Up With It (1974)

Continuing my slow education into Miles' electric phase, my first listen to this sprawling epic. It builds on Bitches Brew and On The Corner, stretching everything out to its limits. I can hear influences on lots of the music I know and love, from the strangled trumpets of A Certain Ratio to the ambient freak-outs that underpin parts of Cope's Peggy Suicide.
Also dedicating this to the returning @danherb10 as he loves jazz 😀

Aberlemno Pictish Stones

There are four stones with superb Pictish carvings in the village of Aberlemno, Angus, eastern #Scotland. These date somewhere between 500 CE and 800 CE.

Three are by the roadside and are comprised of reused prehistoric stone, and one is in the kirkyard, a magnificent sandstone cross-slab depicting a victorious battle.

Captured on Thursday 25th July, 2024.

A photo of the graveyard stone cross, with beautiful and intricate Pictish carving of swirls, plaits and knots. The slab is rectangular but with a pointed top, and the cross itself is carved in bas relief. The areas surrounding the cross depict mythical creatures and windings. The stone itself is brownish-grey, with age-worn faces and lichen growing in spots.A photo of the obverse side of the stone depicting a battle. Armed knights on horseback and foot soldiers with swords, bows and spears are facing each other, and one figure - presumed to be the defeated king - is being attacked by a raven, usually indicating that he perished. The top of the stone is intricately carved with runes, the meaning of which isn't clear.A photo of one of the roadside stones with elaborate and very beautiful abstract carvings. There are swirls and circles, and what might be a serpent. The stone is irregular in shape, brownish-grey and is covered in yellowish lichens.A photo of another roadside stone, showing what is possibly a hunting scene. The main carving is another cross but arrayed around it are knotwork and superbly intricate depictions of animals, although some of them are badly weathered.
