@frod_san @ASNAmNat the American Naturaliat has required code sharing for several years now and has data editors who confirm this
Professor of Ecology & Evolution at UConn. Studies evolution of genetic variation, adaptation, coevolution, and evolutionary immunology. Opinions are my own. I'm here for the science content.
Just emerging from An incredible four nights stay in Mana Pools Zimbabwe with Sunpath Safaris at Camp Mana. The guide, Steve Bolnick, is an incredibly knowledgeable naturalist and conservationist. His company’s commitment to minimal ecological footprint is impressive. Highly highly recommend.
Leaving my computer behind entirely for a two week trip. Excited and and slightly anxious about it
Relaxing summer day at home. For the first time in many years I find I am living in a place I like so much that I am less eager to travel because I miss home.
Great hike with my kids a couple weekends ago in NH.
Someone hiding in my garden haul.
I have built a series of Shiny apps for teaching evolution (partly but not wholly redundant with existing resources made by others).
My apps, plus links to my favorite prior resources, are assembled here:

News on the Journal of Biogeography publishing situation. We (the Associate Editors) wrote an editorial on the situation and name all our concerns especially of researchers from the global south and ECRs. You can read it here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jbi.14697
And please spread the word if you like to support our case!
Tired of waiting for the next Game of Thrones book? ChatGPT provided a hypothetical version of it (full length):

I can only read the first page or so before nausea sets in at the horrid writing style. But it’s worth a laugh.
What’s the best birds of Southern Africa book these days?
Applications are now open for the GREG Rosemary Grant Advanced Awards! These grants provide up to $3500 US for students in the later stages of their PhD who are conducting evolutionary biology research.
Guidelines for writing a proposal, FAQs, instructions for how to apply, and more are available on the website.
Apply by October 2!
@bbolker treesifter lookes more upper level, though excellent. I had in mind something that lets users generate simple strings of short sequences, shows an alignment and a tree, where the user controls a few parameters. Just to get the idea of what phylogenetic inference is about.
@danielbolnick `treesiftr` looks somewhat useful (just searched for it), but not sure what you're after (it would be fun to have a much more basic teaching tool with capabilities like "find the MRCA/visualize a hypothesis about the evolution of a discrete character/flip branches/evaluate whether two trees are equivalent" https://wrightaprilm.github.io/treesiftr/articles/00-Instuctor-Guide.html https://wrightaprilm.github.io/treesiftr/ (author not on Mastodon ...)
Anyone know of good interactive Shiny app pages to teach basic ideas of phylogenetics?
At Stockholm University we have an opening for an Assistant Professor in Data-Driven Evolution and Biodiversity, https://www.scilifelab.se/career/assistant-professor-in-data-driven-evolution-and-biodiversity-3/ This position could be of interest to @ecoevojobs #SMBEfolks #SMBE2023 #ESEBfolks
When white supremacy starts losing elections, white supremacists game the system to hold power anyway.
This is why the United States lacks democratic legitimacy.
