Just emerging from An incredible four nights stay in Mana Pools Zimbabwe with Sunpath Safaris at Camp Mana. The guide, Steve Bolnick, is an incredibly knowledgeable naturalist and conservationist. His company’s commitment to minimal ecological footprint is impressive. Highly highly recommend.

Relaxing summer day at home. For the first time in many years I find I am living in a place I like so much that I am less eager to travel because I miss home.

I have built a series of Shiny apps for teaching evolution (partly but not wholly redundant with existing resources made by others).
My apps, plus links to my favorite prior resources, are assembled here:

"If you're a postdoc in Biology within ~200 miles of Philadelphia, please tell us about yourself so we can invite you for a seminar!

We'd like to showcase biologists with underrepresented identities; we can pay travel, honorarium, and lunch. Please share!"

News on the Journal of Biogeography publishing situation. We (the Associate Editors) wrote an editorial on the situation and name all our concerns especially of researchers from the global south and ECRs. You can read it here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/fu

And please spread the word if you like to support our case!

Tired of waiting for the next Game of Thrones book? ChatGPT provided a hypothetical version of it (full length):

I can only read the first page or so before nausea sets in at the horrid writing style. But it’s worth a laugh.

@bbolker treesifter lookes more upper level, though excellent. I had in mind something that lets users generate simple strings of short sequences, shows an alignment and a tree, where the user controls a few parameters. Just to get the idea of what phylogenetic inference is about.

@danielbolnick `treesiftr` looks somewhat useful (just searched for it), but not sure what you're after (it would be fun to have a much more basic teaching tool with capabilities like "find the MRCA/visualize a hypothesis about the evolution of a discrete character/flip branches/evaluate whether two trees are equivalent" wrightaprilm.github.io/treesif wrightaprilm.github.io/treesif (author not on Mastodon ...)

This July topped almost every record in the book that were just set last year...

So congrats, you just experienced the back to back hottest July's on record.

When white supremacy starts losing elections, white supremacists game the system to hold power anyway.

This is why the United States lacks democratic legitimacy.
