Capitalism didn't give us the internet.
Large-scale cooperation, open protocols, and free software gave us the internet. Capitalism gave us mobile sites that don't work because fifteen ads cover the screen.
All kinds of tech nerd, software developer and consultant, startup founder. From Assembly to Javascript. Always bet on the web!
(I hate pooptooting, memes or any other viral bs as much as you do!)

@baldur It has "pivoted" to marketing "Growth" to shareholders instead, so def. some enshittification involved
@baldur MIFF – Marketing-Induced Feature Frenzy
“Not everybody in software dev is like that! Some coders genuinely care and put in the work needed to make good software”
True, but I feel confident in saying that next to none of those are leaning hard into “AI coding”
The target market for “AI” is SPECIFICALLY people who don’t care
I'm playing records on the internet again.

@TheVinylApe Also you're up late! ;)
@TheVinylApe It's interesting that you feel the same way about many later albums by my favorite bands from back in the day. I mostly stopped listening to rock music 10 years ago and always thought that me preferring the older stuff was just nostalgia creeping in. Or maybe it is and we're both just getting old? ;)
@ainmosni The sad part is, it looks like they've learned nothing from similar issues in the past, even though they seemed to try hard.
"If it really worked, everybody would be doing it. "
If your picture of software engineering is people making rational decisions, then I have bad news for you.
@db "I’m a JavaScript fool and I’m ready for another VC-funded clownshow. LET’S GO BABY!" - I nearly fell from my chair laughing 😂
@bbatsov I think it's still too early to tell. In November 2024 Christian Brabandt said #vim is "more or less in maintenance mode"¹. But the dev mailing list seems lively, they're preparing 9.2 w/ proper wayland support for gvim etc. There is still a big community and maybe some proper structure and direction will emerge.
Gonna play some Hippity Hop and Bonk Wave this morning. 5pm start (8am utc)

The more I play around with AI the more it worries me that it always optimises towards the basic/mid. The phrase “hyper-stagnation” popped into my head, does progress just stop once AI is used everywhere and we just endlessly recycle what we’ve got pre/2025?
@whynothugo The important part are the people you meet here and connect with. Losing them would mean starting over. Not losing your old posts (which you don't really). I'd gladly give up my old posts to support and defend those people. You are one of them :-)
@whynothugo The reality is, no one cares about my months old posts except for myself (and ai crawlers). Even posts with 100s of favs & boost are buried within 1-2 weeks. That's ok. This isn't a blog. This is about today, not last month.
And I only care b/c many posts are just notes to myself. Again, if they have long-term value, this is the wrong place to store them. Posts on a defederated instance—an extreme measure indeed—keep being accessible via their links .That's enough for me.
Look folks I know that the idea of defederation is scary.
But it's not going to break FOSS or the fediverse. People do. By the political choices they want to make. Choosing FOSS is a political act. Wanting to have nothing to do with Fascists is a political act.
On here it's not just about free speech, it's freedom of association.
We don't need to connect to every single person on the planet. We have that choice.
The #Fosstodon issues from 2023 I was referring to were summed up and linked here:

The original post does not exist anymore, but @internetarchive's wayback machine has copies. I'm not linking those here b/c I don't want to cause them unnecessary link preview traffic.
(Btw, donate to the Internet Archive if you can!)
@inpc also it should be noted this is not the first time they're having these kind of issues. 2y ago one of their og mods was called out for similar behavior and it was handled equally poorly by the owners. That's when I left.
