I'm a rebel, baby. I'm revolting.

-------------------------------

I'm #British and #Nigerian. I work in IT, but would much rather be hanging out with my kids.

I listen to far too many #podcasts so I know a little about a lot, and a lot about very little.

@resplendent606 Wow, really? I've never looked into it, but he's always held up as an example for other very rich people.

That's proof that we shouldn't have a system that relies on wealthy people doing the right thing. The system should force everyone to do the right thing.

2025-12-21

@resplendent606 One thing I completely agree on is that we should not live in a world where causes receive donations just because they've come to the attention of a billionaire. I hate that causes need to whore themselves for the attention of the rich.

@RosePuckey I didn't know that it was legal to pay someone below the minimum wage; I thought that was something that Uber has been pulled up on in the past - but maybe that was just for their drivers.

I'm really against tipping as a whole. Employers should pay staff for their labour. I don't think servers should be any different from software developers in that respect.

(I do accept that I'm talking about how I want the world to be, not necessarily how the world actually is.)

So, just imagine that one day you go into a British McDonalds and one of the employees goes above and beyond to the point where you really need to show your gratitude either by way of a monetary tip or a gift (or even a really huge thank you to them). It could be something an employee does as a one off or if you're a serial McDonalds visitor, something that you notice this particular member of staff is doing all the time.

I'm sure there are other options but hey, let's run with this. Please boost as I would love to hear what people think on this subject.

Do you...

@RosePuckey I don't think the idea of tipping would even occur to me. And if it did, I'd feel embarrassed about trying to follow through with it.

Tipping is just not part of the culture here.

@MamaLake Had to google Nature Boy. I'd forgotten that that was Ric Flair's nickname. Don't think I've thought of him in 30 years. πŸ˜ƒ

@EverydayMoggie There's a thing that the podcaster, Scott Galloway, says: the two groups with the very worst healthcare in America are the very poor - and the very rich (cf. Michael Jackson, Matthew Perry etc)

According to him, the very rich end up with doctors too scared to question them or prescribe difficult remedies. The end result is that the rich end up, in essence, with no healthcare.

I haven't though the theory through, but it sounds a bit convincing.

2025-12-21

@MamaLake Is it an either-or situation? I'm working on the assumption that respondents will have empathy for Trump and Musk's victims and will probably despise both men. I am curious if some people find room for empathy in the heart of that hatred.

I agree that it is the root of Stockholm syndrome, tho.

And I love the word 'gluttonaire'. πŸ˜ƒ

One clear difference between Donald Trump and Elon Musk, to my mind, is that, even though they are both unquestionably bad men, Musk also seems to be an immensely unhappy - and disturbed - person.

Considering this, do you ever feel a bit sorry for him?

I don't deserve this.

So a few months ago I watched an 18+ movie on Amazon Prime Video, but because I'm normal I never really use Prime Video. In fact the next time I logged in was yesterday. We'd had a huge early Christmas meal and the whole larger family was sat around the TV in a food coma.

"Let's watch Red One on Prime," someone said. So I logged in...

... And the whole home screen is full of recommendations for my next watch - and every one is porn.

@econads @Nickiquote When you say we do you mean Britain - or Germany? Cos Germany returned lots of statues recently, but Britain has been dragging its heels.

@TheBreadmonkey Santa OR spiderman? Why limit your dreams, my friend? Get both.

@SRDas But that's progress! Thong is a solid, mid-tier word. Whereas Thwang sounds like the name of the fourth Teletubbie, the one they're all ashamed of and keep locked up in the basement when visitors come around.

@cam Hence that Vybz Kartel song "Come fi mi lanyard" πŸ˜ƒ

2025-12-17

@bodhipaksa Now that we've sorted out lanyard, I would like to register a complaint about the word "eggcorn". πŸ˜ƒ

2025-12-17

@SRDas I don't speak French, but even I can tell that lanier sounds like a real word. Trust English to take it and mess it up.
@fennix

2025-12-17

I know that all words are made up, but why do some words sound more made up than is acceptable? Take "lanyard" for example. What the fuck is a lanyard? Why not go all the way and call it a bippityboop? Lan-bloody-yard.
