As a fan of Bob Aufuldish and “Bob’s Bookshelf” (one of the best kept secrets on YouTube youtube.com/@bobaufuldish8262/) I’m excited to see his act live on stage. Bob has a unique understanding of what works in contemporary typography, and he communicates it so well.

@keithamus Agreed, and I think the apps where a custom context menu is expected (eg a drawing app) don’t need to build on top of browser actions. I don’t see overloading the context menu for standard elements (eg. for hyperlinks) as a discoverable mechanism for a website to provide functionality. It feels like it breaks the browser’s fourth wall.

2025-04-28

@keithamus I would have loved it in the past, but it doesn’t feel like the right place for website-specific actions any more… Desktop-like apps would rather benefit from replacing the menu wholesale rather than adding the occasional menu item.

@florian 😍 noted!

@kai @mass_driver It really is a wonderful tool, made for a very well-received gift. Thanks for the recco!

Rescuing the 300 seedlings I was hardening on the terrace ledge and in the garden from surprise hailstorm. Never a dull moment with these guys. How was your Sat?

An outdoor table full of trays with seedlings, some better looking than others. Next to the table, guy standing completely soaked but relieved.

@dbushell I’m not up to date with Gandi’s shenanigans but FWIW I have my non .ro domains registered with them and haven’t had any problems. (Never used any of their other services, e.g. hosting or cloud infra, which I imagine are more prone to unreliability)

@typographica Thanks! It’s good to know these are accessible from the US. It’s for a publishing project, so I need the entire book, but I will request a digitized copy from the library.

2025-04-26

@kupfers This item seems to have the “Public Domain in the United States, Google-digitized” designation, so I’m hoping it’s just a geoblock. (In any case, I’m just procrastinating requesting a copy from the local library :-P)

Do IP addresses in the US have full access to this HathiTrust item, or is access restricted for everyone?

The @w3c WebFonts working group now has a fully functional Demo of Incremental Font Transfer which compares IFT to normal font loading with Unicode-range static subsetting. Just click on "next text sample" to see the font being upgraded in real time to support more writing systems and more font variation axes. There is a running total of bytes transferred, you can see that IFT loads much less data.

Both CFF2 and glyf fonts are used in the demo.

New font: Kermit!

We don’t release new fonts that often, and there is way too much to tell about Kermit, so we’ll just link to our blog. We’re super happy that this font exists and is now available to kids of all ages:

underware.nl/blog/2025/04/new-

Kermit is a writable font, and includes time as a dimension in the font file. In case you want to experience these writable fonts yourself, visit the dedicated website: kermit-font.com (you can also read more about its background). Enjoy!
