@NewtonMark I think of it as Corpmateism
Science librarian, coaching tragic, recovering poet, avid mover, trying to sing and strum at the same time. Do not place in direct sunlight. Sneering in the streets, data extraction in the (spread)sheets. he/him

CSIRO Library Services is now advertising several roles in Collections, Resources and Document Delivery. Three of the roles are restricted to Canberra, one is Canberra or Melbourne.

@ben_hr usually these are the kinds of people who get very mad when libraries do collection management and weeding
Here’s the thing: fuck the ayatollah and his mullahs and fuck Hamas (neither of those bastards would hesitate to put a bullet in the head of an atheist apostate like me) but that doesn’t mean you attack the people of Iran (most of whom oppose the regime) or Palestine (who also suffer under the yoke of Hamas – an organisation that, furthermore, was funded and supported by Netanyahu’s regime to sabotage the peace process).
If you cannot separate authoritarian regimes from the people being oppressed by them, and if you condone the indiscriminate slaughter of the latter, then don’t be surprised when the same rules end up applying to you… given the way things are going in the United States, for example.
We have rules of combat and international law for a reason. It’s not because we’re morally superior; far from it. It’s because we don’t want that same shit done to us. That’s a dangerous thing to forget.
In another echo of times past, just heard an interview on Radio National, which would be hard to describe as anything other than warporn
Again I stand by what I said.
"I can't believe I even have to talk about these people. That's how ridiculous it s."
We have the equivalent of the scientologists running the field of AI with untold amounts of money and power and we're the ones who have to do point by point rebuttals of their eugenicists dreams.
@jimbob very much not the case for the library vendor day I just attended
@jimbob Nice! I have seen a lot of glass trophies have ill-fated ends, so fingers crossed but on the other hand my kids managed to damage a couple of other ones but not my glass ones
Many of you know that I am interested in ways to build collective power for positive social change. You also may be aware that I really dislike seeing people do the same thing over and over separately when they could pool their resources and do it more effectively together.
But most of you probably don't know I'm on the board of the Commons Social Change Library, (https://commonslibrary.org) which aims to help with both of these things!
Social change movements usually focus on immediate tactical considerations and often when a campaign finishes, a bunch of knowledge disappears and has to be learned all over again the next time. The Commons Library exists to solve that - making case studies, tactics and templates available for anyone to access freely.
This work needs resources to keep it going! You can donate to support the library as a once-off or as a regular donor, here: https://2025-eofy-appeal.raiselysite.com
Donations are tax-deductible in Australia *and* in the USA. :boost_ok:
Was just hanging up some washing, in between writing, and my mind drifted back to last month's surreal situation - when, out-of-the-blue, that politician took away my literary award. So bizarre and illogical that I needed to remind myself that it didn't just happen in my imagination.
As an author of odd literary fiction, I love developing characters that are satirical caricatures of the most ridiculous and/or worst kinds of people. I really need to hone my imaginative skills, as I could never have created a character so ridiculous and wrong as that particular politician. Or write a scene so unbelievably bizarre. And the word salad speech that he gave in parliament was pure comedy.
How can I be upset when the situation and 'villain' are so utterly ridiculous? One day, I will add a version of him to a novel. At the very least, it's what he deserves.
He would be a character with few lines, and an odd demise. Perhaps he's crushed by the books that he's ordered the state library to burn? He takes his last breath under the weight of Palestinian poetry, Aboriginal novels, and tomes of critical whiteness theory.
Because a calculator is a device made for a specific purpose, our trust in it would be immediately corrupted if it were to give an incorrect answer. It would be useless.
If you take away the specific purpose you also take away the criteria to determine if something works or not.
This was a really great talk from @EmiliaCaraBell at ANZREG.
"Beyond provocation: Reimagining systems through care, critique, and community"
"What to put in this little text box to convince you to part with your money and support 3CR, a dedicated, independent voice for the community for 49 years.
Seriously, just turn the radio to any other station besides 3CR for 5 minutes. I'll wait.
Yeah, it's pretty important, ay.
What else? Anything over $2 is tax-deductible, and if I know one thing about our audience it's that they're always looking to minimise their tax.
Again, just put on the radio, turn on the TV or open a newspaper to any page. We need 3CR."
If you have stronger feelings of unease witnessing actions of resistance than when watching the State commit acts of inhumanity towards people - you desire status quo, not liberation.
Believing fully in the rights of oppressed people to resist oppression/oppressors means knowing that oppressed people have the right to choose the means of resistance.
They don't require outsiders' permission or approval.
Palestine will be free, from the river to the sea.
@jimbob I mean, this is just a completely morally and ethically bankrupt decision imo
Anti-Georgist propaganda from 1886 that makes Georgism look like the coolest thing ever.
@liamvhogan I would agree but he is incredibly rizless and annoying with an outsized cultural influence
@NewtonMark they might be right about online but I think the article is probably correct in that we swear a shitload fucking more in conversation, in public, the workplace and in culture
