Machine translations are often brought up as a gotcha whenever I criticize LLMs. It's worth pointing out two things: Machine translations existed decades before LLMs, and yes, machine translations are useful. However: I would never in my life read a machine translated book. Understanding what a social media post is talking about in rough terms? Sure. Literature? Absolutely not. Hell, have you ever seen machine translated subtitles? It's absolute garbage.
One of my arguments against the use of systemd is that it's too big. Yes there's the whole Unix model of doing one thing and doing it well, but there's also the maintainability aspect of something the size of systemd. It's well over 1.3m lines of code. No one person can keep an eye on all of that. For something that has become such a core part of Linux, it's an easy target for malicious code. Proper oversight is thus critical.
Do you know what the absolute worst thing you could do with that is?

Mastodon, you are a influence...
Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.
Made the swap to Linux.
Started painting.
Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.
I wonder: Prompts and "skills" and whatnots for "AI" are written as if you were talking to a person. Has anyone seen structured studies about whether that form of flourish is actually beneficial for the inference or if that's just the anthropomorphization kicking in hard?
Like does just dropping the key terms into the prompt work just as well or worse or better? Would love to see some actual studies.
“I’m just so exhausted by both sides of the AI argument” imagine being the kind of piss baby that sees a mass of people who are righteously furious at a system designed from the top down to fuck them over, and decides the anger is just as much of a problem as the exploitation

for fucks sake
@evan @Arthfach @xgranade Most software is not based on stealing the commons and polluting the earth. Most software can be coexisted with because it does not destroy things around it by existing (scraper DDOS, people withholding things from publication because licenses can no longer be used to limit commerical exploitation, elimination of non-model-based software, mandatory infusion of "AI" into major platforms). "AI" does in fact knock things that are not "AI" off the web.
One of the weirder things in "AI" is the whole "skills" thing. It sounds as if those were somehow little programs or tools integrated into your agents but they are just markdown files with strings that you pull into your prompt to hope the slop machine does better. Crazy shit.
Guess what random place Trump will illegally bomb into the stone age and why

The whole "AI" industry is just based on the hope that they can deskill people fast enough that they'll have to rent back cognitive support systems. Forever.
It's like Uber. Just that they don't try to break existing transportation infrastructures but your brain.
So AGENTS.md is just the human-readable documentation the AI dudebros have been refusing to include in README.md until now, because they claim that the code is "self documenting" and everyone else must be stupid if they can't figure things out.
I love making #pixelart games. But #fonts were always out of reach for me. Either they were to small or didn't match the vibe.
So I started to make a #tool that helps me create pixelart fonts.
The current state is still WIP. Some core functionality is still missing and also the UI is still without a theme.
Made in #godot.
In case you need to hear it, burnout is a structural outcome, not a personal failure. It’s OK to stop. 🫂
If you want to transfer your Mastodon account to a different Mastodon server, there's a step-by-step non-technical guide at:
There are a lot of steps, but each step is hopefully clear and easy to understand.
The guide also answers many questions people have about transferring their account. (If I've missed something please let me know!)
