Aluminum MTB frames take a huge beating for a long time. Carbon fiber gets the press because it's so fancy, but plenty of Al bikes out there last a long time. They are just much better than they used to be.

When I was researching gravel bikes, it seemed that the only steel bikes were aimed at bike packers who were going thousands of miles, weeks on end. Short of that, it was Al or very expensive carbon fiber
