The suffering visited on these Norplant users is not just an accident of their own financial problems. State funding structures and health professionals’ private biases have worked together to pressure poor women to keep the device in place. Some state legislatures impose Medicaid reimbursement requirements with the deliberate aim of making it difficult for recipients to have the implants removed. These states implant Norplant for free, but will cover the cost of early removal only in cases of “documented medical necessity.” This means that poor women must scrape together the funds themselves, even if they are suffering from side effects or decide that they want to have a child. Those who cannot find the money must wait out the five years until the state will pay for the procedure. Many private insurance companies mimic this policy, and doctors in states that do pay for removal

I found "Empire of Cotton" by Sven Beckart to illustrate this argument well. He says that the groundwork for modern capitalism (and before it, industrial capitalism) was laid by "war capitalism" based around the use of state violence to expropriate land and labor. These corporations were able to create new states (ie Massachusetts, Virginia) or take over existing ones (as with the Bengali state) but they began fully dependent on European states.

@jabuticaba definitely. Apple is certainly interested in this data and I think they are harvesting all of it for future projects like the one mentioned here.
