Consider how much coverage the national media devotes to DeSantis’ hypothetical presidential campaign compared to the policies DeSantis is imposing right now on teachers and students

@jessdkant … it leaves the average reader at a loss and even distrustful. Me, I make a point of seeking out trans responses, which are frequently convincing. But how many readers are going to wade through the vitriol to do that? I hear too many cis people backing away from the online rage - and with so many legislators now trying to outlaw trans existence, I get more frightened for trans lives every day.

2023-01-22

@jessdkant I read a lot of trans writers and it’s frequently difficult to see distinctions made between outright anti-trans pieces and serious attempts to be journalistic. This isn’t to say that serious journalists don’t make errors, or that editorial decisions don’t over-weight the most controversial angles, but …

@aaron @kissane Let’s not mythologize pensions. My father had what was considered a very good one. When he passed four years ago, and I went through his finances, I discovered the checks were just about $900 a month. Thank God for Social Security.

2023-01-22

@kissane Maybe I’m not understanding but don’t you have this backwards? Employees always shoulder risk, which is why they’re laid off in any downturn, or when any new efficiency develops. Unions mean employees will share rewards, which owners never want to do.

@jessdkant My only question was about whether writers should be ignored/trashed because they are cis rather than because their content is false or distorted. Or do you find all articles by cis writers to be transphobic?

“Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.”

@jessdkant It sounds like you’re saying because most of the writers aren’t trans their stories are by definition false, just projections of their fantasies. Is that what you mean? I can certainly understand why you’d look at them with worry.

There’s tons of great stuff in this article by @zoeschiffer, @caseynewton and @alexeheath. My favorite is the musk-o-meter that goes down as the article progresses.

Thanks @JeremyFaust.

Data Snapshot: Are we overcounting #Covid deaths?

No.

It's a fair question. A recent Washington Post column didn't look at the data. A few times during the pandemic, we have overcounted Covid deaths. Mostly, though, we undercount.

In Germany everyone who planned the coup was rounded up in one day last week, thrown in jail.

In U.S., almost 2 years later, we're still finding texts from members of Congress urging Trump to invoke "marshall law." And Trump, leader of the coup, is running for president again.

Wait? Christians are lying?

RT @indylibrary@twitter.com

We are being inaccurately portrayed in news/social after a room rental yesterday. Our estimated door count during the event is around 750, not 2500. We've had larger events. We turn 150 yrs old in 2023. And our auditorium, which our guests chose not to rent, holds 300, not 2000.

@tzimmer_history I am here specifically for the long threads. I’m sick of the quick hot takes - isn’t that culture what turned Twitter into a hell of trolling?

In fact, if there’s a function I crave here it’s a quick and easy way to see a thread from its beginning. But if Mastodon is going to be anti-thread, then I’m out of here.

2022-12-25

@hyperplanes I feel like I’ve walked into the middle of a conversation. But excuse me if I repeat something:
The fear from non-trolls I know is they will be unilaterally defederated for spurious sins, with no recourse. I.e., some serious question will be treated as sealioning.
These non-trolls value hearing a wide variety of perspectives. So defederation represents a serious loss.
And therefore they are afraid to engage.
