After all, hardly anyone who completes a given task with the help of a tool will take the time to pause and go, “Well, _that_ was enjoyable!” 🤔

To put it another way, a simple “Done with that one!” is plenty of an “emotional response.” 🤷‍♂️

That applies to software just as much as it does to a hammer or a screw driver — even though many a designer thinks otherwise. In other words, when done right, /#IxD is not a glorious job. But it's an important and a deeply rewarding one. (2/2)

@dotmariusz I've yet to read the article, but I already completely agree with your comment: The primary point of good is not enjoyment, let alone delight.

Especially in a commercial context, it's simply about letting users get their work done. If a product supports users in that goal, and gets in their way as little as possible, that is enough. (1/2)

@lolgop The ballot I got had so many rules and steps. I even sent it in via the Embassy in Canberra, after a guard bothered me for expecting one of their services.
I don't think *any* of my ballots were ever counted.

@mekkaokereke @nixCraft Honestly, our disdain for "influencers" comes from the hacking of our attention economy model: producing content of little value optimized to drag attention and make us feel in ways that are focused on driving use to consume.

There's a difference between buying something because you love it and buying something to repair your sense of self.

If we made a better model, I doubt we'd mind if all the small scale, fun, thoughtful content were also profitable.

2024-09-21

@mekkaokereke @nixCraft Large, shared experiences are huge.

When someone decides to stand-up to horrible people, when they need to organize to feed their community, hell, when they're amazing at making their breakfast into a cartoon face every morning, the sense of a shared culture is important.

Granted: that's been hijacked and the virality of it has been turned into a cancer. Maybe through a desire for that acknowledgement and visibility, when our own community connections are so thin?

2024-09-21

@mekkaokereke @nixCraft Can we just admit that social media's appeal comes from the success of creators?
We get caught up in the creator/consumer dichotomy, but when someone makes something I love and it's shared with everyone? When the person creating it is empowered to make more of it? Stardew Valley, Critical Role, and Supergiant Games come to mind.

Social media should be a multiplier for creators, and yes, that has a commercial aspect because everyone has bills.

Seeing lots of people say Three Mile Island was the worst nuclear disaster in the USA. I think people need to be more aware of the Church Rock uranium mill spill. It happened four months after the Three Mile Island incident, and was way more of a disaster. The catch is that it happened in a place that is mostly indigenous land, so it's not made up to be a big deal. Read up on it and learn about how it still affects indigenous people.

@WuMargaret I mostly just remember walking through clouds of downy white feathers before finding a red-tail cheerfully ripping into a pigeon. 😆

Plenty of other birds attack nests, etc. Nature's gorgeous but it ain't comfy.

On Sept 15, Guatemalans celebrate independence from Spain. This evening, we ate tamales infused with raisins, olives, peppers, & prunes.

In the US , many mythologize history as a ratchet of inevitable progress secured by enduring movie moments. Latin American history doesn't offer the same illusions.

When I mark 09/15, I remember layers of growth & loss in the flawed quest for human dignity & freedom. In my history are oppressed & oppressors, and each of us must wrestle with who we will be.

@grimalkina Have to add: I feel you a bit that dissertation pain. Mine had a whole 2nd intro section trying to explain exactly why the communication model I had used broke down when we repeated the same study, but with a slightly greater complexity.

At least in my case, my advisor was extremely supportive and my committee deliberately eclectic, so it wasn't a hard sell, so long as I brought significant sources and context. 😅😮‍💨
