@adamhsparks @benmarwick yes, we tried to add an extra step in the process for some of the submissions. We were not sure when in the process the data editors should act, before or concomitant to peer review. I think we tried different ways. The lack of understanding of what data we were expecting and the general lack of interest was a pattern. It was frustrating. I think the way is mandating data sharing but there is a general fear by publishers that submission rate will fall dramatically.

#Frogeye leaf spot caused by Cercospora sojina is an important #disease of #soybeans causing premature defoliation and reduced seed weight, with yield losses of 30-60% during epidemics - review of the disease in Tropical Plant Pathology (2023, vol. 48, issue 4, pp. 363-374) by Jhonatan P. Barro and others like @edelponte - doi.org/10.1007/s40858-023-005

Left: symptoms of frogeye leaf spot of soybean (circular light spots with a dark brown margin) - Right: Disease cycle of the pathogen from Bradley et al. (2016): The fungus survives in crop residues and infects seeds, wind and rain spread the spores to uninfected plants.

I was recently interviewed by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) for their "Shaping Research Software" series where I shared highlights from leading a team of researchers and programmers developing decision support tools for agriculture and research software. Be sure and read the other great profiles in this series, it's a great way to see what's being done out there in Australian research.

Asked students of my grad course on data analysis in #rstats to produce a #quarto document during each class. Now (semester ending) I taught them how to build a website. Cool websites were produced and made available on GitHub within a week, like this:
niviampereira.github.io/FIP606

I did not plan this initially but turned out to be an excellent exercise that I would like to share.

Plant Disease TraineR has a companion app, TraineR2, that can use actual photographs of the diseased plant tissue, check out @edelponte's blog post on it to learn more here! openplantpathology.org/posts/2 and access the Shiny app here: delponte.shinyapps.io/traineR2 #RStats #RShiny #R4PlantPath

Our paper, “Openness and computational reproducibility in plant pathology: where we stand and a way forward” is now available as a First Look In Phytopathology, now! apsjournals.apsnet.org/doi/10. all analysis code and data are available from GitHub and archived with Zenodo, github.com/openplantpathology/. a big thanks to the reviewers and EIC for helping improve it. @edelponte @zacharyfoster @adamhsparks #Reporoducibility #RStats

Met this week with lots of #OpenScience folks online and in person.

Shared obstacles+frustrations: people in power to change practices in a field to more openess do often not prioritize/value/understand OS enough to implement crucial changes, QC is absent

Positives: we are a strong community with a ton of skills&enthusiasm and have a new generation behind us that do things differently: transparent, more reproducible, open, #FAIR

Poster with title "Reproducibility for everyone", it describes a few crucial things scientists can do to make their research more reproducible: make a data management plan, good file naming, use electronic lab notebooks, publish protocols on repositories, share wet lab reagents and data.

Are you getting started using #RStats in your #agriculture #research and need some ideas for project organisation, i.e., computer file locations and file names or data naming in the files themselves? Leo Bastos has some good tips here to help you get started and make your research both well organised and #reproducible agronomy.netlify.app/post/data

Let's try an !

👋 I'm Carlos. I'm a software engineer at posit.co where I work full-time on quarto.org.

In a recent, previous life, I was a CS prof. After the tenure grind was said and done, I realized I wanted something different.

These days I'm also trying to be less online but clearly failing at it :)

I'm very excited about Quarto, and I'm convinced we're building something unique. I can't wait to share it with you in the next months and years!
