I couldn't believe that PC Gamer headline was a proper reflection of what was said, but... it was.
The thing which most annoys me is that they seem to believe they have a right to do a damaging thing (which they acknowledge is damaging) in the hope that they might find something impactful to do with it (which they acknowledge they haven't, yet) because there's currently a lot of hype about it, and the only time limit on this is "find something before the hype runs out".

PC Gamer headline: "Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it" by Tyler WildeRight now, the zeitgeist is a little bit about the admiration for AI in its abstract form or as as technology.
But I think we as even a global community have to get to a point where we are using this to do something useful.
That changes the outcomes of people and communities and countries and industries. Otherwise I don't think this makes much sense.
In fact I would say we will quickly lose even the social permission to actually take something like energy, which is a scarce resource, and use it to generate these tokens, if these tokens are not improving health outcomes, education outcomes, public sector efficiency, private sector competitiveness across all sectors, small and large, right? And that to me is ultimately the goal.

This article provides the perfect view into React brain worms:

Instead of a native HTML input radio element

It’s somehow easier to import hundreds of lines of code, and implement a faux radio button (that’s actually a button with svg to LOOK LIKE A RADIO), and ARIA rules (to WORK LIKE A RADIO)

Many years ago a wise man - and a leader in the field - explained to me that all AI does is *predict* It’s a great tool for helping to solve problems that can be solved by predicting

I’ve been musing on creativity vs predictably. I don’t think you can predict creativity

Of course, the amount of creative professions’ output that can be predicted by LLMs refines our ideas of creativity

Let’s be honest, Ring was already some technocratic, dystopian BS, but if you needed a reason to finally, finally kill it with fire, here’s your reason: Ring is partnering with Flock to help ICE spy on you and your neighbors for the government 👀

Does anybody know what time they open? I’ve been waiting over an hour already

A suited man stands confidently in front of a weathered wooden building bearing a bold maritime sign: “COCK TUGS – Liverpool Screw Towing & Lighterage Co.” The vintage black-and-white photo captures mid-20th-century industrial pride, with the man’s crossed arms and slight lean suggesting ownership or authority. The sign’s phrasing, though earnest in its era, adds a layer of unintended humor for modern viewers.

One really easy way to improve the application process would be to provide a link to the job description in the acknowledgement email.

I've applied for a lot of mostly similar roles - I can't remember the details when 6 weeks later I get an interview invite

Applying for roles in 2026 keeps on giving

😭 😭 😭

Unlike most companies, where
algorithms reject 99% of candidates
based only on CV keywords, we
believe every person deserves to be
heard. That's why we use an Al-
powered, gamified interview that
lets you show your potential beyond
a résumé.

If you complete this step, you'll receive:

- A fair and equal opportunity: we
assess people and skills, not
keywords.

- The most in-depth feedback you've
ever received after a job assessment.

- An experience that's gamified, cool,
and takes only about 15 minutes.

A side-by-side comparison meme showing the concept of survivorship bias applied to fantasy video game armor. On the left is a diagram of a human figure with red dots marking wounds on the arms and legs, representing where survivors were hit. On the right is a female character in revealing fantasy armor that only covers the arms and legs, leaving the torso and head exposed.

The image includes a tweet by Leonard Ritter (@leonard_ritter) that reads: "our dwarven engineers came up with a new armor design protecting against the typical injuries sustained by warriors returning from battles in the netherworld."

Below the tweet, a Tumblr comment by uniquecrash5 says: "Ah yes, the ol 'B-17 survivorship bias' lesson. Okay but this is a hilarious explanation."
