Scientists studying Arctic plants say the ecosystems that host life in some of the most inhospitable reaches of the planet are changing in unexpected ways in an “early warning sign” for a region upended by climate change.

Rich countries are dragging their feet on producing new plans to combat the climate crisis, thereby putting the poor into greater danger.

All governments are supposed to publish new plans this year on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, but so far only a small majority have done so, and some of the plans submitted have been inadequate to the scale of action needed.

The overwhelming majority of people in the world – between 80% and 89%, according to a growing number of peer-reviewed scientific studies – want their governments to take stronger climate action.

But at least for now, this global climate majority is a silent majority.

The current mismatch between public will and government action amounts to a deficit in democracy.

The world’s coral reefs have been pushed into “uncharted territory” by the worst global bleaching event on record that has now hit more than 80% of the planet’s reefs.

"People are instinctively drawn to majority views and are also more likely to do something if they think others are doing it too. Making people aware that their pro-climate view is, in fact, by far the majority could unlock a social tipping point and push leaders into the climate action so urgently needed." New summary by @rahmstorf

Is the Atlantic Overturning Circulation Approaching a #TippingPoint?

"But the fact that all these studies, using different methods, point in the same direction, toward a risk that is much larger and earlier than we had thought until a few years ago, is a major concern. My assessment of these ... studies is that by the time they can provide a reasonably reliable warning of an impending #AMOC tipping, it will be too late to prevent it."

The home-wrecking storms and floods that swept Europe last year affected 413,000 people, a report has found, as fossil fuel pollution forced the continent to suffer through its hottest year on record.

The climate crisis has tripled the length of ocean heatwaves, a study has found, supercharging deadly storms and destroying critical ecosystems such as kelp forests and coral reefs.

Half of the marine heatwaves since 2000 would not have happened without global heating, which is caused by burning fossil fuels. The heatwaves have not only become more frequent but also more intense: 1C warmer on average, but much hotter in some places, the scientists said.

Last year marked a historic and deeply troubling threshold: for the first time, global temperatures exceeded 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Without drastic and immediate climate action, this breach will not be temporary. The consequences – rising sea levels, extreme weather and devastating loss of biodiversity – are no longer projections for the distant future. They are happening now, affecting millions of lives, and likely to cause trillions in damages in decades to come.

#gaia #tippingpoint #blackswan #randomness #breakdown Have we just witnessed or witnessing one of those #seismic and totally #random events that really do change the course of #history. It does kind of have that feel, but I've never lived through one before. ✊ 😎 #geopolitics #economy

The world won’t stay below 1.5C of warming, largely because we’re already there.

“We now expect a 3C world,” states a March analysis by Morgan Stanley. This level of global heating above preindustrial times is well beyond the 2C limit agreed to by governments and would lead to catastrophic heatwaves, floods, economic strife and other upheavals.

The climate crisis is on track to destroy capitalism, a top insurer has warned, with the vast cost of extreme weather impacts leaving the financial sector unable to operate.

The world is fast approaching temperature levels where insurers will no longer be able to offer cover for many climate risks, said Günther Thallinger, on the board of Allianz SE, one of the world’s biggest insurance companies. He said that without insurance, which is already being pulled in some places, many other financial services become unviable, from mortgages to investments.

Economic models have systematically underestimated how global heating will affect people’s wealth, according to a new study that finds 4C warming will make the average person 40% poorer – an almost four-fold increase on some estimates.

Just finished the REVENGE of the TIPPING POINT by Macolm Gladwell. It's really interesting in the context of our current political climate but also around things as facetious as Linux on the Desktop or Artificial intelligence. It's hard to observe and participate in some of these group-think related tipping points while also trying to be introspective without feeling as if you are part of the problem. Or worse, becoming apathetic or putting your hands over your ears and pretending everything is fine.

His end quote has rung a bell in me however, "The tools necessary to control an epidemic are sitting on the table, right in front of us. We can let the unscrupulous take them. Or we can pick them up ourselves, and use them to build a better world". Sometimes, those of us with the abilities or talent or voice just need someone to remind us it seems.

Tipping points are fabricated, engineered, built and that's OUR lane.

Normally, two-thirds of sea level rise is due to melting ice from mountain glaciers and Greenland and Antarctic ice caps, and one-third from the thermal expansion of the oceans.

Last year, the hottest year on record, this was reversed, with warmer water accounting for two-thirds of the sea level rise of 0.59cm (0.23in) – considerably more than the 0.43cm scientists were expecting.
