This "new normal" of constant reinfection with a disease that carries a high risk of disability is neither sustainable, nor does it resemble what we were told to expect in 2021. Read every word of this piece thegauntlet.news/p/how-the-pre

@glyph idk how i feel about the feature itself, but fwiw, my first thought was "well you can already record your own audio but that's a turbo nerd thing and you'd have to uhh rejigger pulseaudio and" and then i saw someone posting "yeah i can already record voice chat with obs" and i went "oh"

@glyph we only just had discourse over discord shuffling the mobile ui around and breaking everyone's muscle memory, and how that's rude and intrusive because it requires people to drop everything and catch up on something they thought they knew yesterday

so how do you launch a new thing without being like that

eeveeeevee
2024-01-03

@glyph my understanding is that discord tells you about clips when you join a call? i don't know what else they could do. my spouse told me just yesterday that they never read the changelog popup

i don't know. it's easy for nerds to say "simply make every feature opt-in" but that's mostly a good way to make 99.7% of your users never use a feature or know it exists

@whitequark @gabboman in this case you do. there is a thing to turn the thing off

Everyone needs to check out Splort instead. It's better because it doesn't do anything and no one uses it

Friends, I have dire news. Not only has Discord added a feature, including a warning about when the feature might be used by others, but they have ALSO added a setting to turn the feature off, buried deep in the settings menu under a tab with the name of the feature on it. This is a sign of Discord's slide into irrelevance and we should all stop using it. Software should never change and it's an affront to me personally when it does

OTTEROTTEROTTER! 🦦

I’m SUPER excited to introduce Percy today, now in fursuit form! He was made by @cfstudios (their first otter!) and they did an absolutely amazing job with him. I’m ecstatic about how he came out! 💙

If you listen to the news, you could be forgiven for thinking that everything is shit.

It’s not.

One example, Humpback Whale numbers are growing massively.

@Gankra "Safety measures make memory-unsafe languages slow." Good fuck, I love that they explicitly call out the whole "Rust is slow" canard.

HOT FUCKING DAMN

In Android 13, about 21% of all new native code (C/C++/Rust) is in Rust. There are approximately 1.5 million total lines of Rust code in AOSP across new functionality and components such as Keystore2, the new Ultra-wideband (UWB) stack, DNS-over-HTTP3, Android’s Virtualization framework (AVF)... These are low-level components that require a systems language which otherwise would have been implemented in C++.

Security impact

To date, there have been zero memory safety vulnerabilities discovered in Android’s Rust code.

We don’t expect that number to stay zero forever, but given the volume of new Rust code across two Android releases, and the security-sensitive components where it’s being used, it’s a significant result. It demonstrates that Rust is fulfilling its intended purpose of preventing Android’s most common source of vulnerabilities. Historical vulnerability density is greater than 1/kLOC (1 vulnerability per thousand lines of code)...
