A warm hello to my Fedi friends - especially people who self-host their own #Sharkey instances. I have a #selfhosting question for you about naming conventions.

Long story short, I purchased a VPS plan, installed #YunoHost on it, successfully set it up and all I have to do now is install my first app. My goal: to run my own Sharkey instance but also use the domain name I associated to the VPS plan for other things.

I notice some of you self-hosters have usernames like [at]user[at]sk.domainname.tld - I'm thinking of doing something similar. I'm wavering between using "sk" and "s" - I wouldn't want something too long. Your advice is much appreciated, thanks! 🙏

Currently browsing #Misskey as I'm preparing a blog post about its fork #Sharkey. And I have to say, I'm so sad that I don't speak/read Japanese - and I am thus unable to enjoy the full Misskey experience.

In this blog post I mentioned I want to learn a new foreign language and I've been hesitating between Spanish and Japanese. I am now leaning heavily towards the latter, so that I can properly enjoy Misskey (in 4-5 years from now). Wish me luck!

As an independent musician, I'm basically begging everyone to stop giving Spotify free advertising for their exploitative business model by posting your "Spotify Wrapped" on social media.

Especially THIS year, after Spotify set a new PER TRACK minimum of 1000 streams PER YEAR before musicians are paid for ANY streams on those tracks.

Spoiler alert: the next issue of #TheFutureIsFederated will focus on the amazing #Sharkey. I am absolutely enamored with it and its beautiful UX/UI.

At times I felt it was a bit ridiculous to keep two Fediverse microblogging accounts – this one and my Mastodon one (@_elena@mastodon.social) but in time I have found two great advantages:

1) I can bridge this account to #Bluesky (my Mastodon username starts with an underscore and is unsupported by #BridgyFed)

2) I can do interoperability and federation tests. For almost two months, I thought my Wordpress blog @ele@elenarossini.com didn't federate anymore because of a bug. Turns out, it doesn't federate correctly on Mastodon, but it does here.

All this to say: I'm delighted to have accounts in both places and I simply adore Sharkey. Many thanks to its developers 🙏

@evan@cosocial.ca this doesn't answer your question Evan, but IMHO every middle school, high school and university should have digital literacy courses... and the Fediverse should be at the heart of that. As a means of communication (infrastructure) AND its inner workings should be taught to students.

My plan for 2025 is to offer schools presentations about "ethical social media" AKA the Fediverse. I've done dozens of presentations about media literacy and advertising and I hope my next chapter takes off (since I'm even more passionate about the Fediverse)
