My uncle is a really good amateur photographer, & took me to a bird sanctuary to teach me about how to use my camera. Here is the one shot I got of a beaver who appeared near the end of our walk. I call it "Card Full". ("and now you've learned another lesson about photography.")

A pretty good photo of (I think) a willow in sharp focus in front of a very out-of-focus lake. The darker blur from the right edge to about 1/3 into the frame is the beaver I was actually trying to capture, and its wake. Or maybe it's a samsqanch. We'll never know.

3 days after Mother's Day, and it looks like the local grocery store is going to be stuck with a mountain of heart-shaped boxes of American raspberries. As that old sing-along classic goes: youtube.com/watch?v=8S0aD6QLTx

ETA: Dammit, it doesn't display the link thumbnail. Now I have to explain the joke: It's the Exploited song Fuck the USA.

I expect I'll be bringing a *lot* of food rescue raspberries to the little free pantry on Monday.

@ErgonWolf Not anymore! I think you made those up, but I'll go with it.

Finally, the balcony is scrubbed, planted, and put back together for spring. It's sangria o'clock, baby. (Glass courtesy of @flisswave )

View along a long, narrow balcony. In the foreground is a table with a copy of Emily Carr's book Klee Wyck, a highball glass containing sangria with a skull and the words 'Sloth love punk' painted on it, and a tarragon plant in a pot. In the background is a patio chair, a jasmine growing up a wall, and a shelf with various herbs in pots. A honeysuckle is wrapped around the railing on the right.

Well, would you look at that. Delicate wash (warm, because my machine doesn't give me a choice), dried flat, and it did just fine.

If you're wondering, the yarn is Laines du Nord Matera: DK weight, 100% Merino Gentile (an Italian sheep breed grown in Puglia), 160 m/50 g or 175 yds/1.75 oz. I didn't love the colours available at my LYS, tbh, which is how I ended up with light grey, but at $9.99 CAD a ball, it's pretty affordable for the quality and yardage.

Hand knit swatch in a light bluish grey, with twisted stitch patterns of waves on the left, mountains against garter stitch on the bottom, sort of conifer trees in the middle, and something that when I play around with the placement will hopefully evoke grasslands. The swatch is now blocked, so it lies nice and flat and the stitches are more even.

Commemorating this baby blanket swatch in case the lovely, woolly yarn I picked up at my LYS is 'European washing machine safe on wool cycle' and not 'North American top-loader delicate cycle safe.' Wish me luck! #knitting

The swatch is unblocked, so the stitches are a bit wobbly and the top garter border is curling up a bit.

Still thinking about the Mogwai show in Vancouver. With everything going on, *waves hand frantically at the world*, standing in that old ballroom being scoured by a wall of noise like a cleansing fire was just the reset I needed.

As the opening act, David Pajo, said (roughly): They will lull you into a sense of security, and then they will take your head off like a toddler with a Toblerone. 😂

@rickscully RIGHT?!?! There *may* be yarn purchases.

This is the mill that spins for Beaverslide, so if you/ @sarahscully have ever checked out that yarn, you know their work. So springy and airy.

Just realized that my uncle's place is ~2 hrs from Custom Woolen Mills, so the chances of me taking a day to go geek out about Canadian wool and ancient spinning machinery are very high. customwoolenmills.com/

@sbourne Isn't it? And it's pocket-sized, which might appeal to a 6 year old.

apparently there is a “rave collective” in toronto that has offered to be on-call for any reports of right-wing protests to bring a portable sound system and drown them out with 200bpm hardcore acid techno

i am so fucking here for this

Punishing my landlord for a false fire alarm this morning by going to his office unshowered with my hair every which way, declaring, "Since you made me put on pants, I guess I might as well bring you the rent cheque now." The new tenant in the office looked at me like I was from Mars, but oh, how we laughed.

Every day I get a little bit closer to my life goal of being that loud old broad in the artsy clothes that nobody fucks with.

@flisswave Wow, that's a beauty! Once again I wish science could come up with smell-o-vision for the internet.

@rickscully I was just coming back to say, "Hahahahahaha of course you voted for turtles."

2025-05-01

@rickscully Yeah, I think you're right. I also got her this, so it'd be kind of a theme.

A cardboard palette of paint in the shape of a painted turtle, with different parts of the shell having blobs of different coloured paint. The card is made by Beam Paints: Indigenous Plastic-Free Art Supplies, and on the left is a list of colour names in Ojibwe, with English translation.

Trying to come up with a 'congrats on becoming a big sister' give for the niece, and its down to two things. One may be a bit ambitious for the time available: ravelry.com/patterns/library/l

The other one I've made before to great effect, and it'd be a lot easier to ship. (Photo is of the last one I made.) ravelry.com/patterns/library/e

Composite photo of a hand knit toy sitting in a flower pot full of seedlings. Clockwise from left: a cream-coloured egg; a smiling turtle in shades of green with a striped shell; the same turtle from a slightly different angle, so the face is more visible. The turtle turns inside out to become the egg; the egg becomes the stuffing for the turtle.

My uncle just now: "Does this mean I have to clean out the barn?"

Me: "No, we'll just spread out a blanket on the horseshit and call it good. At least it's soft. And warm."

(We'll be staying in a trailer on his property.)

Just nailed down some dates to visit my uncle near Leduc, AB. Woop woop! Himself has never seen the BC interior or the Canadian prairies, so this will be an excellent road trip. I don't even mind doing most of the driving so he can gawk out the window.
