And its done, my first SMD solder job worked out. My N64 (FRA) now outputs RGB without additional mod board! Amazing 🙂

Ok. Ready for next step. Got way better camera, pre heat table and successfully changed SMD components on a test board. N64(FRA) next…
I managed to find a launch-day Switch2, and so far, I am impressed. The hardware feels high end and durable, the bigger screen is welcome, my Switch games run fine, and Mario Kart is great fun. Happy with it, glad Nintendo had so much attention to detail, it shows. They literally seemed to have fixed all flaws of the original switch. The onboarding is also very good, fantastic UX there.
@Gammitin Nice, flagging interest. However, I would need shipping to DE.
Adorable.

need to correct the statement here. Got my NUS-001(FRA) and while the board is READY for for it, my machine has SMD components missing to make the RGB work :-/ sigh. Just ordered them all, but they are SO tiny, my microscopy equipment is inadequate. Once i dare to do the mod, i ll post about it. Here is a good setup/guide for the mod: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7esB8V-lD1Q&t=298
Did you know? The French version of the N64 NUS-001(FRA) is the only version that comes with RGB out of the box? #retrogaming just scored one for cheap :-)
@mmu_man newton pow4h :-)
Revision 2018 invitro https://arkt.is/no-invitation/ still giving me goosebumps. Every - single - time. What a banger. #demoscene
Finally got around to putting an ODE into my Rev1 Atari ST1040. This one presented quite a few challenges (cables too short, directly soldered to board etc). Quite satisfied that the first test works. Now to reassemble it. #retrocomputing
if you want to see the Atari Lynx game -> Entry #14 here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_CjDg8f9Gs&list=PLNqQO7lFY6dm7hN3EbTlR6XIJ_Oq7lh4y&index=20
My mighty A1200 @ Revision 2025, with an added Lynx for good measure
(we at Retroguru released a Lynx entry called "Wayzard" which made #3 in the game compo!). Newton demo next year? :-) @revisionparty @newtontalk #retrocomputing
@wotsac and for the record, the OSX application (NCX) worked just fine for me, did not even try NCU yet.
@wotsac @jrsharp @newtontalk @liilliil low and behold, IT WORKS NOW. It WAS the cable, all i needed to do was to cross the data lines as follows:
Thanks for all the tips! Btw only 5 pins need to be connected:
Newton TxD- (pin 3) connects to Mac RxD- (pin 5)
Newton RxD- (pin 5) connects to Mac TxD- (pin 3)
Newton TxD+ (pin 6) connects to Mac RxD+ (pin 8)
Newton RxD+ (pin 8) connects to Mac TxD+ (pin 6)
Ground (pin 4) connects straight through
@wotsac I know. I am testing with both. I am now sure it’s my cable, which is a 1-to-1 MiniDIN8. Got to cross a few lines. Will report back. I do hope NCX (I got 1.9, which works on Tiger) will work.
@liilliil I learnt that my cable is likely the culprit. Some lines need to be crossed like in a null modem cable. Will butcher mine and see if it works.
@liilliil hehe if only I knew :-) anyway I ll look at it again as time permits and update here
@liilliil this may indeed be the issue. It’s not an official Apple compatible cable, will verify pinouts using https://morganavery.nz/things/newton/newton-serial-adapter-din8-to-db9/ and https://www.jneuhaus.com/applserl.html
@newtontalk @jrsharp thanks! As I hard reset the Newton already, I suppose only 38400 is available. I am starting to question my cable. Will verify the pinouts
