It is fantastic that AI companies can freely scrape copyrighted stuff from the Internet, but downloading of `youtube-dl` is illegal in the whole EU, because Hamburg regional court said so .. 🤦♂️

The thing that galls me about Microsoft Recall is that it tracks everything you do on your computer, but Microsoft themselves have demonstrated in vulnerability disclosures that they clearly don’t even log what the hell is happening in the Azure control plane.
@dom does a fracture propagating through a metal plate?
BREAKING: Federal judge rules that Florida’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors and many of its restrictions on similar adult care are unconstitutional. More to come at Law Dork. https://www.lawdork.com/
@ieure it's not a sentencing, it's just a hearing
"People act like writing #code is the hard part of software. It is not. It never has been, it never will be."
"Writing code is the easiest part of #software #engineering, and it’s getting easier by the day. The hard parts are what you do with that code—operating it, understanding it, extending it, and governing it over its entire lifecycle."
Despite the headlines, Dutch #EU #election results provide subtle change, away from centre-right to left, and to far-right
Progressive, pro-EU parties (Green/SocDems, LibDems D66, Volt, Party for Animal Rights) together won 14 seats (+2 from 2019).
Conservative right-wing parties (VVD, Christian Dems, NSC, 50+, SGP, Christian Union CU) had the strongest loss with 9 seats (-3 from 2019).
Far-right anti-European parties (PVV, Farmer's Party, Forum for Democracy) went from 5 to 8 seats (+3).
Business meetings exist to share information and coordinate activity: this shit enables you to be apparently present in all but actually not engaged with any. If your calendar is triple-booked then your organization is under-resourced and needs more people, not more AI. Or it's holding unnecessary meetings to make management feel better about being surrounded by minions, in which case it needs to fire the executives responsible.

Finnish landslide for Left, second-largest party in EU elections.
Also some small joy to be had in the fact that notorious climate change delayist Eija-Riitta Korhola didn't get elected.

Auch wenn die Grünen am meisten Stimmen verloren haben, ist die SPD das wahre Opfer der Europawahl. Sie haben nur Stimmen verloren, jedoch von keiner Partei gewonnen!
Schon wieder ein #Klimakleber
Three Copilot+ Recall questions that keep coming up.
Q. Can you alter the Recall history?
A. Yes. You can change the OCR database and change the screenshots as the logged in user or as software running as the local user. There is no audit log of changes.
Q. Are they snapshots, as Microsoft says, or screenshots?
A. They are just screenshots, jpegs.
Q. What is to stop apps on your machine accessing your Recall covertly?
A. Nothing. There is no audit log of access.
It feels like big tech has basically given up and has retreated to indulging in escapist fantasies: space colonization, blockchain, AGI, the network state, metaverse, "hacking death", etc.
None of this solves any problems, or, even works as advertised.

It adds weight to my suspicion that the real key to being "productive" with generative transformers is not caring that the output's wrong.
I don’t know how to describe this book. It’sa Gen-X West Virginian transsexual magical realism sex work novel. It’s good, enthralling, and not a little problematic. The author has an interesting, gender-y history. I wish I knew more about her. It’s foreword is by Billy Corgan. That’s a red flag. But the story was fresh.
