I don’t remember who on socials recommended Peter Watt’s Rifters series to me (after I talked about Blindsight) but I just blew through Starfish (Rifters 1) in a sitting & loved it. Liked Sphere but wanted the characters way more messed up? This is your book. & SO prescient about AI/LLMs for 1999.
@c_dan4th he's definitely had that training a dozen times already ;)
Watching my son + friends figure out how to make a table from first principles is one of those "sometimes the best parenting move is to shut up and step back" moments. Having built a lot of tables I have to resist giving advice. Only thing I did was to give safety training on tools to his friends.
@laird @scottwillsey I'm hoping to see pam-rssh move into official repos in time. It's a very nice facility.
btw this podcast season from the Revolutions podcast on the Martian Revolution was so, so good. THE BOOK TITLES... EVERY ONE I CLAPPED THEY ARE SO GOOD.
@laird @scottwillsey I have a second ssh key that I use just for sudo (separation of scope and role, so diff keys) and I have the key location set to an alternative location. This makes things a little more intentional for me, which I prefer, but it's user preference here.
A modest protein proposal: If you’re serious about maxing your gains, the purest protein comes from free-range billionaires.
Wrapped up a 6 session playtest of my next Mothership scenario and it was blast and the players were outstanding. One of them got me a lovely end of playtest gift, a sakura liquid core d20 from Everything Dice which I'm pretty sure takes my dice game from 1980 to the year 3000.
Gridtracker + WSJTX working nicely with SDR-Control for relatively complete #hamradio digital mode work on my Macbook.
Joke all you want about the trump phone but this will be saving SO MUCH time for folks by preloading Russian malware that you usually need to load by hand.
Man wait till this guy hears about phlogiston
Republicans always think they can control the extremist contingent that they then become.
@liztai If I were dealing with this in the community I run (which admittedly is a different set of norms most likely) I'd *maybe* consider reinstating the user after another waiting period (like 1 to 3 months) and I think your "join and lurk only for x weeks" is a good idea as well.
Tough one, and I get the complexity here. Good luck!
@liztai I tend to take a "clear rules, clear consequences" stance in the community management I do. Sounds like you were clear about both. Personally if I've taken the step to ban someone, they are banned and not coming back but that's just my approach.
@MLE_online :( I feel like if we had the social capacity and will at this point (something the US almost certainly doesn't right now) we'd have some sort of educational curriculum around how to have debate and discussions online.
(I know approaching discourse online in good faith gets weaponized by the worst people so we'd have to build in curriculum around how to deal with that too. And I don't really know the answer to that latter one.)
@MLE_online while this would be a perfect time for me to politely disagree so that we could prove that it's actually possible, unfortunately I completely agree with your points.
@MLE_online I don't always disagree with him (far from it) but I feel like if he wanted to really improve things he could have chosen to work more seriously to improve and shape bluesky instead of just kind of throwing up his hands. Just wishing we'd see Real Money stop supporting twitter & musk.
I imagine that if your concept of social media has been shaped by thinking of people as "media consumers who must be exposed to your bullshit" instead of autonomous humans with agency and the ability to control what goes in their eyeballs, blocking and muting might seem unusual. https://fortune.com/2025/06/12/bluesky-backfiring-mark-cuban-lack-of-diversity-of-thought-x-users/
