I told her I had conceived this work while sitting still, as I was working as a model in an art academy. I was focusing on the air I shared with the room, visualising each breath as a balloon, as a vessel, and, later on, as a clay whistle. I wondered about the sound of such a whistle; and, back home, I realised the object which had been in my mind.

She listened to the lamenting tone, and concluded: "The very nature of sound is to expand and fill up the room; but this sound stays where it is, it does not seek to conquer its surroundings. The object fits the situation where it has been conceived. It is, so to say, a sedentary sound".

Born in Haarlem and now living and working in Antwerp, Delta van Melle has developed a playful, layered approach to painting. Their works, combining flat tints, collages, sprayings and graffiti on glass plates, give pride of place to accidents and coincidences. Delta's works are on show this weekend and the next at boox.space — Leidsestraat 53 Zwart Haarlem.

After an intense breakup summer in 2023, I went to the north of Greece with a group of unknown friends, as lost as me. We found ourselves in abandoned buildings, stoic bars, to then end up on a rainy day at a trashy hot spring with some friendly, naked strangers from all over. Thank you Jana for this weird trip 🌱 Hope that this drawing is honored and will never be lost again.

Delta van Melle is a visual artist based in Antwerp. For their paintings with sculptural qualities, Delta works with repurposed and found materials. Combining glass, wall paints and childish drawings, they create a space for seriousness on one hand but always for playfulness. Van Melle approaches their work with naivety - very intuitively and physically - finger painting, scribbling and experimenting with all kinds of materials as they go, one of wich is a waste material from kombucha brewing in their herbalist practice - scoby (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast)
a material that embodies themes of growing up, containment and social construct. These works focus on an aesthetic and sensory experience that reflect the tension between control and chaos. Central themes researched in van Melle’s work are imperfections and coincidences - queerness and childlike purity.

From 2 March to 6 April, ‘Round and About’ brings together the work of Marlies Appel and mine at 37PK in Haarlem. The inner connection between the individual and the world forms the guiding thread of the exhibition. At the opening on Sunday, 2 March, at 4 pm, Renée Borgonjen will present both of our works and introduce Marlies Appel’s latest book, Serpentine, published by 99 Uitgevers.
