#Voting where I can:
- union
- local school council elections
- boards
- shareholders
- primaries
- community organizations
Remember you have lots of types of #power!
Writing about my last ten years in the science of tech policy, I am reminded how designers & advocates perpetually imagine ourselves at the start of something new.
It's a trap. I'm grateful for humanities training that draws me to history amidst deliberate amnesia.
@ntnsndr explains this amnesia here:
Next panel: “We build the future – software infrastructure and invisible bridges” with
Karolin Varner (@rosenpass), Adam Burns (sig0namectl) & Holger Levsen (@reproducible_builds )
Some great analogies about invisible infrastructure components:
1) the wire that goes into the bridge that connects the road that cars drive on to make deliveries;
2) not just washing your hands but washing your vegetables before cooking.
Next up is the second panel discussion:
Together with @marmarta, @kc and Giacomo Nanni from Vantage, we discuss that developing software is not just about writing code, but also includes, for example, UX design, community building or founding an association.
“The goal of a project should not just be to write good code, but to make a positive contribution to the world. Good code is just a tool that helps you do that.” 💯
Great panel at #8jahrePrototypeFund talking about accessibility, usability, design and community in #opensource and increasing reach and impact through talking to people.
"Users are partners in the process of making a thing that works better" - @marmarta
Thanks for the coaching shout out @travisbrown !
What else made a difference in @PrototypeFund funding? @travisbrown says: coaching!
You might not expect a FOSS project to need coaching, he says, but getting very different expertise at key points was hugely helpful.
I’m proud to lead the coaching team with my colleagues and our community at @sprblm - we’re beyond happy to help. #8jahreprototypefund
Congratulations @PrototypeFund !! Happy to be here and celebrate with you for #8jahreprototypefund
We're so excited to have Jac sm Kee @jhybe at our stage!
"It is a weird time right now: We have seen how digital technology has become on of the main driver of violence. [...]
I imagine a not so far future generation asking us: What have you done about it?
The story of tech as being created to dominate over people is exhausting. It is important to be reminded, how critical, radical and revolutionary the open source idea, the community and their projects are in this context."
Listening to Jac sm Kee at the 8 year anniversary of @PrototypeFund
Yes, the many projects, initiatives and visions coming from open source and open knowledge movements give hope, even in these times where activists are under pressure and progressive donors face scrutiny.
And: "most of our work is composting the leftovers of colonialism" - we try to change the system while working with what it chooses to give us.
“Most of our work is composting the leftovers of colonialism” says @jhybe at 8 Years of @PrototypeFund. Six to ten companies in 2 or 3 countries are controlling the narrative and the funding - we need to step into our power and widen our sense of our own capability and responsibility.
I’m going to remember @jhybe’s description of a “tech vegetarian” for a while.
A carnivore says “take all my data, I don’t care about supply chains and invisible labor, I just want it easy and cheap and frictionless.”
A vegan says “you have an iPhone? Fuck you.”
A vegetarian tries to find the midpoint. How do we keep the lines of communication open?
One can see many parallels between open source technology for social good and wildflower seeds growing to plants in the cracks of concrete walls.
That's a great picture Jac sm Kee @jhybe from Numun Fund @numun draws in her keynote at #8JahrePrototypeFund.
Let's try to give our best to help widen the cracks!
@andypiper I mean. Always!
@andypiper yes! Let's find each other and catch up!
So excited that for this trip to Taiwan, I can walk! #rightscon2025
Pest Control Company: Do you have any animals?
Me: No, just toddlers.
